Hi everyone,
I'm relatively new to freediving. I'm thirty now and a little out of shape due to back problems but having discovered a pain free life in the water I am concentrating on getting fit again and enjoying the underwater world. I used to be able to hold my breath for 2 min 30 seconds, swim 50 m breast stroke, and have been down to around 15 m. I'm not quite back to this level but I am wondering what are the average times, distance and depths for a regular but not competitive freediver, just something to aim for for the future.

Your numbers sound like good averages. It'll come back fast I assure you, and your back will be happier
Enjoy yourself and be safe.

Oh, I think you should put your ambitions slightly higher than that.

I takes only will and knowledge of some techniques to hold your breath over 4 minutes (not realy an athleteic achievement).
If your ears are normal - 25 meters is less than a minute long dive.
50 w/o fins is good. Put in a turn and you´ll be proud of yourself.

None of these numbers ask any hard physical training - it just asks of you to be relaxed (more or less).

holding breath for 4 minutes sounds incredible to me. my question is this. how do you know what your limits are? surely only by holding your breath to the point of unconsciousness can you know how long you can hold your breath for. and this does not seem sensible!
how do freedivers going for records know when to start breathing?
thanks for any replies.
