How many laminates?

Hey all,

In the process of gun production, just wondered really is there an optimum number of laminates? toying between mahogany and teak, more likely mahogany, how many laminates guys?!

Three lams are pretty much standard but some prefer four, five or more.
I have built ones using fifty laminates & ones using mixed wood.
Teak is expensive but again the norm, mahogany is also expensive & sometimes very difficult to find but glues up better.
Any hardwood can be used its just the oily ones like teak & iroko that are more often recommended.

Thanks for the reply foxfish, luck has it my dad has some lovely mahogany sitting in the garage just waiting to be used ill get some pics up when its started.

If barrel strength is a importance over appearance, make sure you oppose
the grain to increase resistance to splitting.

Hey don thanks for posting! The middle laminate will be one way with the two outside going the otherway if you get me? I cannot wait until its underway start the laminating soon.

just finished a gun, used 5 laminates. i found after shaping the sides i had 3 full laminates down the middle. hope that makes sense
