OK, so I'm off to Cyprus next week but today I had the worst day of the year - had to have my dog put down after 14 years loyal service amongst other things. Anyway it all got a bit on top of me and I punched an inanimate object that I really shouldn't have done (dur!). Result? nice laceration of the knuckle and two hours in A&E.

Anyway the point is I've got to keep the hand dry for 7 days so any suggestions for doing this - only going to be going shallow 15m or so.

Is it actually feasible to keep it dry or am I just gonna have to sit it out :(

Can't help you with keeping your hand dry Scuby.... but whereabouts in Cyprus will you be??

Donna

You could try a dry glove like this, but you'll be hot wearing one in Cyprus!
Sorry to hear about your dog :(

I'm sorry to hear about your dog. I've had pets all my life and know what it's like. :(

I have seen someone wearing a sort of plastic bag thing to keep his hand dry, so they do exist. I don't know whether they would sell it in a watersports shop, or a hospital, or for physiotherapy.

hey Scubs
read the title of your post and my first thought was: "keep one hand dry - doing what??" :rcard

Then i read on....man sorry about your dog :( 14 years is a long time with a pooch.

In all seriousness, perhaps a condom or two? will really stretch over the bandage or plaster (i have seen people put them over their heads so should fit)

Cheers all for kind thoughts re:

Donna - just outside Protaras :)

Island Sands - condoms on the head?! that's the other thread! I reckon a condom on the hand would look like Kermit the Frog after Hannibal Lector's been at him!

Was thinking about latex surgical glove with slip over cuff maybe?

Hi there,

latex surgical glove should work well ... used these offshore for u/w welding. May need to tape the wrists with electical tape or similar and then obviously wear something more heavy duty of the top ...

Regards,

Scuby - Lovely end of the island.... I'm in Orokilini, so around 40 mins from where you'll be. If you're free and fancy a dive let me know.... Presume you'll be diving around Cape Greco area?

Donna

Yup around Cape Greco, the Point and Chapel and Green Bay. R U sure Orokilini isn't in Hawaii?! :) Cheers for offer - we always keep tabs of emails and stuff whilst away so depending how it goes with the hand etc we'll PM you if we can meet up ;)

Cool - look forward to it. If we don't manage to meet - have a great time... :)

Donna

Just seen the dry gloves - blimey, one size fits all! I suspect my left hand will be, erm, considerably more bouyant than the right, LOL. Should look like the underwater equivalent of Rod Hull and Emu!! rofl

The glove could come in useful as a hand paddle to go faster!

Sorry to hear that....even with the surgical glove, you probably will still get wet, because of the sweating...

I wear the gloves pictured above due to the cold here. If you wear a nylon liner glove insidethat will help with sweating. I've dived them down to 30 metres with no squeeze that's harmful or noticeable.
Peace,
Erik Y.

Cheers Erik - knowing my luck at the mo, i'll probably have all sorts of eq-ing probs! Thanx for putting my mind at rest re: glove - picking a pair up today.

It seems that the idea is to keep stitches dry so as not to devolve before the healing is complete. Latex gloves are easy to rip like condoms, and hands sweat more that you would think. A cheap idea would be to make a waterproof barrier out of a non water soluble glue. My favorite is PVC cement. Its used for gluing PVC pipe together. I discovered it while building my sprinkler system. I couldn't help but get it all over my hands and it took a couple of days of scrubbing to wear it off. It is thin clear and water tight and can be purchased at any hardware supply store for a couple of $. It will give a durable water tight patch.

Reading this in Cyprus. Oh boy has this holiday been interesting! The dry glove I brought out had a tiny hole in it, and this was the second from the same shop (first had a leak round the seal) :( Name and shame: Dive Oddysea in Rochford, Essex needs to throw out all his stock of dry gloves.

Heroes amongst men - Olympian Divers, Ayia Napa - the best dry 'You've been Tango'd' glove in the business! cheers guys

*edit* Olympian demoted from hero status on account of ignoring requests for return of deposit :rcard - don't say it's a deposit if it isn't, tut tut! :naughty

Promoted to Hero status are SunFish divers though :king - needed a bit of additional ballast *ahem* (pounds on the waist=pounds on the belt, lol!) lent FOC :)

Unfortunately, we were getting ready to go in on Saturday - didn't get near the water however cause my wetsuit caught the cut and partly reopened it- ouch! Much bemusement by other divers at the site who'd seen us turn up, get kitted up, then get unkitted and drive off again! LOL!

Then of course there's the sea scooter - bit of pain to get here, but much more of a pain that the battery vent plug threaded the first time we went to go to use it. Terrible, terrible design - clearly a known problem as well as the instructions mention being careful with it (which I was!). Name and shame: Dolphin brand scooters from http://www.seasports4europe.com . I'll have one up for sale shortly - unused - avoid!
All offers considered tho, LOL!

After all this, both of us are having major problems with ear clearing (as in they won't). very frustrating - may have to write off the diving this time as we've been out 3 times with minimal success. Dems de breaks I guess.....still, the hand is healing nicely :)

Tahoe - the PVC glue is a brilliant idea, worth remembering if I do something stupid again ;)

Donna - sending PM
