I think, miker, you're actually talking about a different thing. These guys don't go out on scuba just to shoot some 5kg aj in 10m of depth. We're talking 40+ meters here and fish like submarine cows. YOU won't do that freediving. So stop whingin'...
I do only hunt on freediving and in less than 20m and on fishes less than 5kg. Spearing like that with tanks is simply not on, i agree, but what iya is doing is another kind of spearing that cannot be done on breathhold and never will be done so. Iya deserves some respect for his way of spearing, especially if you know how selectively and specialised they perform their sport. And you, miker, could know that if you read properly...

would you please help me write a proposal to ban scuba hunting? Please include location, species hunted and our local enviornmental impact in your proposal. With your guidance I am confident we can end this horrible practice.

miker my "friend". i once was just like you. appaulled and disgusted by the combination of tanks and spearguns, and just like you i started to just yap away about how spearing on scuba is unethical and how i would be cought dead before engaging in it. it is then that Rigdvr, showed me the helldivers website (www.helldivers.org) and i read around and did a seach on the web. i have a very different, and may i say, more educated opinion. although i would not engage in scuba spearfishing, for the simple reason why i no longer scuba- i find the bubbles extremely annoying, but not as annoying as seing this topic pop up over and over like a teenager's zit.

so, before passing judgment on your peers, i do bid that you take a good hard look at what they do, and maybe you shall gain enlightenment.

also, our resident Mr.Long Post is almost exclusevely a scuba spearo, and we all have gained a large amount of knowledge from him. imagine how we would be if we shun him just because he uses scuba?!

As a PADI O/W diver man you sure as heck don't have a lot of comparison points (18 meter max depth limit :duh ). I'd rather be free-diving than doing that. I think stalking a 50kg doggie at 40 meters on a sea mount would compare admirably!

Do you know the fish called "sea bream"?
It is probably the most difficult fish to catch in Greece.If they see air bubbles they disapper.The only way to catch them is the technique the Italian call "agguato" (ambush in English) and you can't do that while on scuba.
Last thing that you don't know it is that in greece Scuba and spearfishing is illegal.Even scuba diving (without spear) is illegal in most places(don't ask me why ,i won't tell you)

Wow! That's a big Carp. Might very well be fake - the lighting doesn't look quite right - but theoretically they do get really big - never stop growning and all that. I once speared one that bent a 3/8 inch spearshaft against the water.

I don't see the problem in goin 150 feets after a 50+ kG. tuna with Scuba?? can you do that on freediving !!congratullation!!

here is another Scuba vs Freediving argument.

Let me say from the beginning i don't like scuba hunters in Cyprus, but this not the because of the "equipment" they use rather they like to dive and kill every fish they see, regardless the size. Scuba hunting is illegal here as most of the european countries. You go someplaces to dive and you see that scuba "butchers" ruined the hunting grounds, this absolutelly nast thing from my point of view.

But i don't mind if some dude want to shoot his fish to eat with scuba and has no freediving ability The ethic here is not the "equipment" you use but how you respect the sea, nature and people right.

I think not buying fish from commercials (trawlers) but shooting fish for yourself either with scuba or freediving is more ethical. I think shooting monster fishes more than 150 feet with trimix is challenging and rewarding as shooting fish with freedive!!!!

I AM TIRED OF SAYING SAME THINGS ALL THE TIME ABOUT THIS TOPIC BUT EVERYTIME SOME GUY COMES HERE AND NIGHTMARE STARTS AGAIN, THIS FORUM IS NOT THE WARGROUND FOR DIVERS. IS IT REALLY FUN TO ARGUE ON THE NET??????

Dive with a partner so you both can shoot one!

Interesting stuff in this thread. Just wanted to use Cobia to make the buddy diving case one more time. Not only is it unwise to dive alone, but with fish like cobia you’re actually at a disadvantage. The only time I think cobia swim by themselves is when their partners all got shot. The few times I have seen them without at least one other cobia, they usually were swimming with a different species. Not with a school of a different species, but just one fish! They seem like a very social fish.

Chances are if you see one cobia you will see another. When one is shot their partners usually will give you the best close up one time chance look over you will get. If you and your dive partner are separated, one of you probably just lost an excellent opportunity. After that one chance they seem tend to disappear for the day in that area.

Can’t wait to try Rigs technique of ripping out their gills! The last cobia I shot one was a long shot as I missed the best time and had to fire while he was swimming away. I had a slip tip and it went in just ahead of the tail and came out about 1/3 up from the tail on the other side. It swiveled and held, but boy was he hard to pull up. We were in a tournament and the guy on the boat wouldn’t help me because of the tournament rules.

Yeah, well just make sure you row that boat, as the diesel fumes create air pollution and leak into the bilge and all of us boat owners just pump them over the side, and make damn sure that you watch your wake so you don't disturb any of the plankton and ferchrissakes don't let that anchor hit the bottom lest it disturb something or hit some non-silted over coral, and don't you dare wear a wetsuit as those things are made of petroleum products that pollute and don't piss over the side either as NASA might be doing a fly-over with a satellite taking pictures and think that that trail is a result of global warming, and don't use the radio as it's rumored to cause the shakes in seagulls and ...

use a float and line , no reason not to as for stoning a cobia its pretty hard fortunatly alot of time ther pretty placcid until you try toput them in the boat
