I am having difficulty with the line from the spear to the gun. I have a Mares Instinct Pro. The last few times I have been out the line has got tangled when fired . Any hints or tips much appreciated.

Hi Alex, Is it like this speargun:

Take a look at the Dummies Guide to Speargun Rigging thread - that will likely answer most questions. If that fails, it would help if you could answer/clarify some or all of the following:
Are you using a reel?
Are you using a muzzle bungee? Does it have a swivel?
Where is the line release (is it that little grey line just below the butt of the spear)?
What sort of spearline are you using (e.g. monofilament/strimmer line, kevlar/Spectra/Dyneema, para-cord)?
How many "wraps" of line are you using (single wrap is normal & simplest but some use a double wrap - there is an unusual device that allows a half wrap too)?
Is it just tangling with itself or with other things (e.g. your float-line, stringer).

Yes, that's the one. I'll have a look at the Dummies Guide then come back if I need help. The line to the spear frayed too far on Saturday so when I fired the spear flew off into the kelp on its own... Forecast here rubbish so hopefully the replacement will arrive before the sea dies down.

Frayed? What is your spearline made of?

I would suggest using monofilament (e.g. fishing line or strimmer/weedwhacker line) ~ 1.6mm diameter seems about right for UK & euro-spearguns. You'd need to either crimp the end loops [ref. to Dummies thread] or, you could wrap them with splicing/wrapping cord & then superglue or varnish that.

Lost spear? What a pain. I had one snap off once (experimenting with rubber bungee spear-line but it deteriorated a lot over the winter) but fortunately I was able to recover it - a possible advantage of shiny european s/steel spears over the less conspicuous galvanized spring steel SA spears. It's usually worth having a look around if you drop/loose something.
