Hey Dudes and dudettes,
I might be going on a trip to Fernando de noronha off of NATAL in Brazil. Its her brothers wedding (he lives in Natal) but hes not sure wat the laws are as the local law arent that helpful. My girl friend is from Belem du para. I was just wondering what the regs are there for spearing. Ive looked on the net with no such luck. Has anyone fished there? And if so wat was it like? Im pretty stoked as i cant really afford to go anywhere very often. :blackeye

I am near Salvador and from what the locals have said here they dont really have to many regulations. And if they do have any they dont seem to enforce them. I am brand new to spearfishing and somewhat new to brazil, so i could be wrong but havent seen/heard anything else yet??

Also, just wondering if anyone has any tips for someone starting out spearfishing in brazil? I cant really find anything on the internet, so i figure my best bet is, when in a bigger city, to get a book of the types of fish around here? I dont need a wetsuit here, so is a weight belt necessary? And one more, is it a good idea for starting out to more float/swim slowly on the surface rather then sit on the bottom? I can probably only hold my breath for a max of about one min right now, and would have no idea, yet at least, where to go to stay on the bottom??
Thanks for any tips!

As far as I know Fernando de Noronha is a national park and spear fishing is not legal there, it is true that Brazilians (like my self consider any thing being legal as long as you don't get caught). When I visit the island 20 year ago they were really tough of that.

As for spearfishing regs on open areas in Brazil, one needs to have a sportmans license from IBMA, that allows the fisherman to catch 15 Kg of fish plus one fish of any size, during my 30+ years for spear fishing in Brazil I was never asked for a license, but one of my friends had all his guns take away because he did not have a license. Also as far as I know Jew fish are not legal and lobster depending the time of the year.

Pescadoro , if you are in Itacare, you may want to say hi to TomTom and Romulo, they know all about fishing on that area.

Pescadoro, I only just read your thread now.... are you still in Itacaré? Where are you from? I'm an Aussie, but I've been living about 2hrs drive inland from Itacaré (town called Ipiaú) for the past 5 1/2 years! I used to go to Itacaré all the time, but have now built a place on the island of Itaparica and go there nearly every weekend. We scuba dive a lot, but also free dive.

Let me know where you're at and what you're up to!

Cheers,

Platta.
