i don't know if i'm a begginer in hunting or not...i even don't know what make an underwater hunter to be a begginer or not....
but i post here just to be shure:p
....................
first i did snorkeling in 1974, and than...in one day i left the surface because the temptations was to big...at the beginning i dived up to 2 meters...quite hard at 6 years old because i was afraid of the "void" bellow me
later...after 2 or 3 years i was able tu buy my first pair of fins...everything changed from then...i mannaged to go deeper [4-5 meters]....along with the new depth...new challenges. I remeber that my special hobby was to collect crabs...
one day i was at 4 meter deep and i saw a realli big crabs and i wanted to grab him...in that instance, a little turbot run away just under my eyes...
i left the crab in his peace and i stood quite to observe the little turbot camouflaging in the sand....when i was used to that image, i went out of the water, a grab a little speargun [my father's one..hehe i was nearly 8 years old:p]...and...get back to the water...in that day i shoot my first fish...
when my father came back and saw me that i used his speargun, he gave me a little lecon of behaviour, but what can i say....i was to happy to let me turn blue:D
that was happened 30 years ago...
i catch a lot o fishes since that time....i don-t remember everyone of them, but that one is still in my eyes, like it was happened yesterday...
i discovered that underwater hunting means a v good knolledge about submarine life and a great respect for the pray....
and i have this rule when i shoot a fish.....if he manage to escape from the first hit...i let him go [even i know that i can shoot him twice]....because i guess that we must give them a chance:)

Hey Vali, Nice story, Its amazing that your speared your first fish when you were 8 years old. I have two sons, and the younger one wants to hunt with me really badly! He is only 4 1/2 though. I guess your water is warm and clear there with not too many waves?? Here it is cold and rough, I am always wondering how old my boys will have to be before I can take them out past the breakers??
Cheers!

i guess the age of 14 will be more aprropriate for a kid to use a little not so powerfull gun
my waters are not so clear and not so warm
the black sea is a temepered sea
the good visibility is arround 7-8 meters but often is no more than 2-4 meters...
in the winter and spring is more clear...but 2 to 10 degrees Celsius:p

**************************

untill tomorrow i will try to translate the post that a just posted above....
the story is interesting and i did'n manage to think her directly in english...
as sun as i will have a little time i will try to post it in english
thanks for understanding:)

OK Vali, thanks, I don't understand even one word as it is :)

ok...the english version:

let me tell you a little adventure from one of my many hunter sessions:
i was in the water from about 2 hour and a half, it was aprill. the water between 8 and 10 degrees Celsius.
I allready gathered 7-8 pieces of turbot. all this fishes was hanged on a string tide by my lest belt...of course the repetitive dives was much hard to do because of those 7-8 turbot [especially the return at the surface]
so!
i decided to go out of the water at the shore...in my way back i saw a big turbot somwhere at 6 meters depth
i would have renounce at him, but it was clear for me that he had more than 4 kg....to let such a fish go was out of the question:p
goooooood!
i dive with the string of "dishes" after me::D....arrived at 6 meters in no time...shoot the fish....
the big animall is strong....he fight quite well for 6-10 seconds and struglle to put himself out of the spear....i'm well-aware that he is not good speared
for safety, i decided to go at the surface to deal with him, but after ~2 meters something pull me down....
the gun cord was twisted upon a rock . i tried to untide the cord with the left hand...the gun and the fish pressed upon my chest with the right hand...the water was cold...i did'n had gloves
i realised than that i couldn't get the gun untied in safe time....
i let the gun and the fish down there and i get up to the surface, watching with great sorrow the turbot...he mannaged somehow to escape from the spear and with slow mouvement he left the battle camp...
i am at the surface....i take deep breath...i'm calm down...i try hard to remain above the place because the water was not so clear to see my spear-gun from the surface...
damn it!
i realised that the sea is not so calm and the waves and the currents could have mouved me and i was in danger to loose my sperargun
i dive random....try to relocate the rock...good god! the rock is there, but the gun is no more:(
i cover an area of about 6 square meters arround the rock....lucky me:D...the gun was somwhere at 4 meters from the rock dangling in the bottom currents...
i grab the gun, go out at the surface, swim all the way back to the shore and tell to myself: vali...exageration is not good...you have enough fish...it's cold...you're tired...don't brave...don't do usless heroic act because if you remember, you allready losed a gun some years before
*******************
now a lot of scenneries cross my mind: what if i was lucky enough to saw that fish at the beginning of hunting sesion?...when i was not tired....not freeze and with no fish at all?
*******************
next spring i was going to catch a 5,7 kg turbot:D:D:D:D

thanks Vali, great story. It shows it's not worth being greedy: just take what you and your family can eat. Cheers.

well
i must say that the turbot is to be found just in spring-time in our sea
to get to the sea i must drive about 400 km so as you can imagine, i do not go there very often....
i'm not a greedy man, is just that i go there only once a year, and hehehe my familly is big ennough:D]
althought, a lesson was learned by me from the above story:)
