Im new to this and there is no free divers around hear and no classes .what im looking for is info on the corect way to hyperventilation and lung packing assuming that's not the same thing from the info i read.

Hello Kartoum, and welcome to DB. The guide to hyperventilation is extremely simple: avoid it! Hyperventilation is by distance the biggest killer of freedivers. If you are interested about details, just use the search function here on Deeper Blue. There are plenty of threads with much more useful info than I can copy here. This one would be a good start, but there are many more:

http://forums.deeperblue.com/freediving-science/77624-hyperventilation.html

As for packing - it brings many risk factors, and recently there are some new studies showing the risks are even bigger that originally considered. Read for example here:

http://forums.deeperblue.com/freedi...pharyngeal-insufflation-cardiac-function.html

And again use the search function above in menu to get more info.

In any way, packing is definitely not a technique advisable to newbies. If at all, it should be only used by elite competition freedivers for stretching, and for maximal performances. It is definitely not needed, and not advisable for recreational freediving, or for spearfishing.

So if you do not aim for breaking freediving records, you better completely forget about packing. And you can forget about hyperventilation instantly - it is not only the worst risk you can add to your dives, but it also reduces your hypoxic tolerance.

Hi Khartoum,

Just because you're not standing next to a free diver at the moment doesn't mean there aren't any around!

There is a small active community in Vancouver BC and I'm pretty sure there are some freedivers in the PNW too. Your welcome to come up to Vancouver for some pool practice. We "train" every two weeks at the UBC aquatic center but are taking an Olympic break until mid march.

check us out here: Vancouver Apneist Freediving Club

Hope you can come up.

Nick
