Well, actually I was second place in a spearfishing photo contest.

Last month Pacific Sportfishing magazine announced a contest for spearfishing photos. I sent in a few photos of fish taken by friends on my boat this year, and then hoped that not many people were even aware of the contest.

It seems strange that they haven't contacted me yet, but today the July issue came in the mail, and a photo of Dam got me second place. It appears that I will be winning a Paduak Competitor #3S. Next I'm going to try to find out what one looks like.

If it occupies a niche in my arsenal already occupied by another gun, I'll probably be selling it a discount to retail price to try to recoup some of the fortune I've spent on the boat this year.

congratulations! which is you in the image? :D

Neither. No photo with me in it could ever be published, much less win a prize.

However, the guy on the right is Dam Nguyen, my best dive buddy in all respects.

Well done Bill but who is the chap in your amazing avatar?

That would be me circa 1954 or so.

Wasn't I cute in my Speedo?

BTW,the gun I'm holding is a Champion Arbalete fitted with a Penn Senator reel held to the barrel with hose clamps and filled with thick stainless steel cable that we bought at the local airport. They had not invented spearfishing reels at that time.

Awesome pic, not so much on the cute side ;)... got any more?

I'm afraid we didn't have the foresight to take many photos with our box camera. This one below is the only one I've found of roughly the same vintage- maybe a year or so later.

My girlfriend is on the left holding my arbalete, and I'm on the right holding my Cressi spring gun. The shaft was bent by the cobia that my buddy was cleverly posed to hide.

I have some others of tarpon caught on rod and reel, but not speared. The one on the left appeared in Sports Illustrated magazine in the first year of publication. I don't think they print photos of kids with fish any more.

Nice going Bill! Congratulations!

Now we know your spearfishing secret. I never would have guessed to strap my Penn Senator onto the stock. Was that a 4/0 or 6/0? rofl

Great photos. Thanks for showing us how it was done and sharing what it's all about.

Enjoy your Paduak. Make sure to cook it all the way through. You don't want to get trichinosis.

Congrats Bill!!! Kutos on your circa pics as well. They are very reminiscent of the old SD Bottomscratchers photos. They truly give a sense of meaning to the innovation, determination, and preservation of the sport's founding fathers. It's old-timers like yourself that keep us young bucks (ok, I'm 40; I'll just say younger) hopeful of better days and better ways. Did I mention that the Triton tip on the wood handle has got to be one of the most impressive in my opinion. A hui hou
