Well to be more correct I hate the term "sea bass"!
Why are restaurants adding "sea" to so many fish that don't need anything added to their name
Last night I was watching master chief on TV when they started talking "sea scallops" :martial
Sea bream, sea bloody every thing!!!!!!!!:martial:naughty

You tell um Foxy,:martial:crutch but you have to admit that those “Sea Lobsters” are a lot better than the normal run of the mill lobsters.roflroflrofl

not sure.. Has it anything to do with someone from across the pond mistaking it for a Large Mouth Bass or Small Mouth Bass which is a fresh water fish?

by no means meaning to offend my USA friends... just a possible explanation ;>) !!

+ I expect I am wrong re. the above and I'm about to be whipped and taught something about fish species rofl

100% behind you with that one Foxy: I'm always getting "Oh you only got a bass, shame you never get any sea bass" aaaaarrrrgggghhhhhhh

There's another little thread going on at present about Chilean Seabass. Trouble is Chilean Seabass is actually a fish called Patagonian Toothfish. Aparently it's a nice eating fish but ugly by name and ugly by nature, so it was filleted and the fillets sold as Chilean seabass. Made even more famous by being mentioned in Jurasic Park ("excellent menu, we have Chilean seabass"). Soon as it became popular the commercials fished it to near extinction but that's another story.

I was at the in-laws having Christmas dinner, when my girlfriends Nan, or Mother, I can't remember, asked if I ever get any "sea-bass" when I go diving. I think they were surprised when I finished my rant five minutes later , during which I had moaned about everything from T.V chefs, to Tesco's farmed, tiny "sea-bass". I enjoyed it thoughrofl

Actually, has anyone noticed how small the fish seem to be on the fish counters? My girlfriend always pulls me past quickly before I can come out with some comment or other, usually within earshot of the attendant.

Here in the USA the nomenclature drives me crazy too! No commercial largemouth or smallmouth for sale but we do have hybrid farm raised stripers. The aforementioned "Chilean Sea Bass" was very much in vouge but now has fallen way off. Quite a few fish are renamed to boost retail and restaurant sales. Having run the fish market here in my store really kept me in the loop regarding the species being strip mined from the oceans. Orange Roughy was the same for quite awhile. I rather prefer cobia (ling) and now they are farm raising it with quite a bit of success! Tastes great. Mutton snapper is coming along in aquaculture too but is much slower growing.

Mind the nasty comments when floating past the fish counter :martialwe do have sharp implinents and skinning plyers. :t

I really rather taking my own as much as possible and am very selective.

I think adding "sea" to the name is a great thing. I don't ever want to be eating an oyster and find out it's a prairie one, not a sea one....

Now sea here everyone, no more moaning about all this seaillyness! It'll get to the point that people will confuse their boss when they call in from home saying they are "sea" sick! Sigh... Sea sorry - seasigh...

Some folk probably prefer sea food over freshwater species like trout, carp, pike - I know I do. Pav's right though, the Americans are mad keen bass fishermen. They have Bass angling programs on TV every Sat. morning and TV ads. galore for the latest and greatest bass lures (obviously a civilized, forward thinking country:)). But the bass they go for are usually freshwater species, like the large mouth bass. They do have saltwater bass too, including the huge striped bass on the east coast and the huge white bass on the west coast. But the TV programs & ads. focus is squarely on the freshwater species.

I texted my brother about a large bass once and he thought I'd got a bass guitar:D.

To avoid confusion I would like to propose refering to all fish by their latin names (maybe just the nomial version). If this goes well maybe we could include vegetables and then take it from there...

I tend to rant when people go on about 'sea bass' too - maybe we all need to rant more.

Also there must be a point where this term was first coined and an author who coined it... I'd like to see them identified and then tied to a lampost and be slapped with 'sea bass' for a few hours.... might sort the fecker out...

Its a big joke in our house when Rick Stein or some other cheffy person is on telly singing the virtues of SEA Bass

I, like a grumpy od man, shout at the tellyroflrofl

My kids also join in (I think they are taking the p1ss out of me though)

The "striped" bass we have in Texas are actually hybrids. They are a cross between white bass (spawn in rivers and migrate to lakes) and the saltwater stripers. They do look like their saltwater cousins. We also have a hybrid Red Drum (Redfish to Southerners) that do especially well in powerplant lakes (stays warm). And even if you could see in the lake yah can't shoot'em. :naughty
