I have the opportunity to move to Florida, what are the best cities for freediving?

In the coming year I'll have the opportunity to transfer job locations to either Ft. Lauderdale, Orlando or Tampa. How is the freediving around these cities and do any of them stick out more than the others?

Orlando is in the middle of the state, so the freediving sucks.

If you were asking about spearfishing, it would be a tough call. On the East Coast clear blue water is close to shore. In general you have to be able to make deep dives to get down to most of the fish, but you are within sight of shore. On the West Coast, where I grew up, clear water is often way offshore, but the depth increases only about a foot per mile from shore. If you can run way offshore and know the GPS numbers for good spots, the free dive spearfishing can be very good.

But since you put this in a free diving forum, I'l assume that you are interested in just going up and down lines. For that, Ft. Lauderdale would be the winner. Deep clear water is closer to shore.

I have had the opportunity to dive a bit around Florida...

Ft. Lauderdale has a great and healthy freediving community and great diving a short run from shore.

The inland locations have proximity to some really nice spring diving--clear cold water and caves to explore.

As far as spearing, I'd say Florida favors divers who can dive deep. Out of Destin where I have the most experience you need a bit of bottom time at depths 80' and beyond to get quality fish. Ft. Lauderdale I think has a steeper coastline and significantly more natural structure than the gulf spots so a skilled hunter ought to be able find game fish a bit shallower.
