From personal experience, dont let her hold you back or grind you down. You go for it ;)

4 mins is really good for a 15 year old. I couldn't break 4 min barrier until I was 16...

thats good news for me then :P im 16 in 2 weeks exactly and ive already broken 4mins.

Keep it up! It's amazing what training can do for You isn't it?
On the parents-issue: Do listen to them, sometimes they're right - and sometimes they just don't know better - but remember it´s only sometimes that they know what they're talking about, not always. You'll have to find out what they're good at and what the things are that they just don't get.
This is an excellent achievement that makes You part of a select few, and don't let anyone tell You otherwise.

All the best,
Sanso

If your mum's attitude comes from fear for your safety then educating yourself and her is a good way to go - and you have done the right thing by joining here!

Island Sands is right. You are not wasting your time. Be happy at your progress because you deserve it.

yeh the only training i been doing is Co2 tables, and swimming around in the pool. thats pretty much it. yeh i know i should sometimes listen to mum but she dosent want me to make my own tracks in life. she wants me to like become a computer tech or something like that cos thats wat she does. She also has a bad temper and shows it everyday just over really small things. but when i did the 4min breathold, i was doing breathdowns to get my breath back and she went off her head "thats just F****n stupid holding your breath that long, i dont know why u F****en bother with that, its a waste of time" :(

I second that You should educate Yourself (and Your mom) about what this breath holding does (or may do) to Your body. Make Yourself an expert in this field and most likely she will respect that as soon as she understands this.

... she wants me to like become a computer tech or something like that cos thats wat she does.
heheh, :D You know, one can do many things in one's life - even at once. I am a geek by profession, and with somewhat of a passion as well. But that sure doesn't keep me from doing other fun stuff. One's own lazyness sets the limit there, IMHO.
Of course, You don't have to become a computer person, but life is more fun if You know Your way around in more than one area. (hey, if You feel like selling insurances is more Your thing, go for it ;) ).

She also has a bad temper...
Ah, that's always a hard one to deal with, but try to be easy on her and things will lighten up. She's probably only human as well, ...

But, I fear we've come off topic enough for this thread (and this forum) - This kind of stuff I think should best be talked about with some kind of an uncle or such,

Take it easy,

Sanso

I have been freediving for only a short time - this is my second summer. Last year my PB was 2:30 and last time I tried (a cpl months ago) i got 3:04. I have never had any training except reading books and the internet.
I will admit that those times were achieved with no supervision. I know now how risky this sort of behaviour is and hence no further attempts to date- just finning lengths of a 25m pool on one breath with rests of about 1 min. Hoping to find some training partners but everyone seems to just want to kill fish.
On the parent issue it is your life and as the wise man said "you can't please everyone all the time so you just got to please yourself" -personally if someone tells me I can't, shouldn't or won't do something it gives me motivation to prove their jealous arses wrong!
P.S. If you're over in NZ anytime get in touch.

I am with sanso on this one. Im a supreme supernatural computer geek by choice :D but that is not everyones calling in life. As long as you can wake up one day and go to work with a smile on your face ... you have found your calling.

As with parents, dude im 28 and my mum wasnt too happy once she heard i was going to start spearing. And she has always been cool and supportive with everything.

What bugs her are the dangers involved with spearing and the ocean in general. My advice to you is, take what sanso said to heart, educate them and dont do anything irresponsable, like dive alone etc etc.

Most times parents just want to know that their kids are responsible in what they do. :)

Chin up, chest out, and hold it for as long as you can......
