I need an Outboard 8hp-9.9hp

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.

Right guys it's gear buying time and Im after an outboard for my rib.

8hp - 10hp short/standard as its the biggest my boat will take. I thought about putting a 15hp on but i'll probably land up killing myself rofl

Ive got my eyes peeled on ebay but if any of you guys have one for sale or know someone give us a shout.

Scott, the issue is normally based around engine weight, a boats transom will handle a certain power limit but you dont have to give full throttle if you can find a higher horse power but stick to the weight limit.
I can tell you a Tohatsu 9.9 two stroke is about the lightest motor of that hp rating but look out for lightweight four Strokes as they are so much more user friendly.
Do some revision because some 10hp motors are very heavy.

Nice one Foxfish some good advise there.

if I go for a weighty outboard it will limit the area's I can launch from, I dont launch from harbours or slipways so lugging a heavy outboard up the beach would be a nightmare.

Hey Scott. I bought a 3.4m Avon from Shiny1, and he said an 8hp would be ample for carrying two spearo's plus gear. It was good sound advice, so I bought a 15hp. Its a bit heavy to carry, but it don't half go some!
 
9.9hp is a size you need to research carefully as quite a few of these are basically a detuned 15hp. This can mean you have all the weight of a 15 with only a different carb to give the hp change. My 15hp Merc weighs 35 Kg and so does the 9.9hp model.

When I bought my motor I was initially looking for a 4 stroke as they use less fuel and make less smoke when going slowly, but after some research I stuck with 2 stroke as they are easier to move around off the boat being generally lighter (4 stroke 15hp can weigh 50kg) and less fussy about which way up they are transported.
 
Ive got my eye on a 9.9hp johnson 2 stroke at the moment. cant seem to find out the weight of it. Youtubed it and they go like the clappers
 
Good reliable engine. I use one as my kicker on my 17 ft. sailboat--could almost ski behind it. Always keep a spare & properly gapped plug w/ proper wrench on hand if motoring at low speeds for long time as plug can oil foul sometimes. :head But usually never any problems if you run it to higher rpm & burn it off. :martial
 

Definitely good advice, I did have to do a plug change at sea once but most times when I noticed it starting to missfire I just gave it a short burst at full throttle and it was OK again.
 
I have a Mariner 15hp Marathon ex-RNLI. I bought it because its chunky, solid, and easy to maintain. It came with a quick drain carb which I think is a good feature if you happen to submerge the motor.
 
If you are looking for a cheap, lightweight, under 20hp outboard then the choice is quite limited.:head
However it should be pointed out that buying cheap secondhand two stroke motors could be a risky business especially in the reliability stakes!
Nobody even makes normally aspirated (carburetor) two strokes anymore!! The biggest problem from a dive boats point of view is that two stroke motors do not like low speed running, if you are tyring to follow a "diver down" then expect problems with the motor oiling up.
Of course there are still thousands of 2/Ss in use but if you have a choice it would be better to use a four-stroke as they are far more user friendly & much cheaper to run.
Not many thing are more scary than breaking down at sea - things can soon spiral out of your control.
If you do buy a 2/s please dont compromise money for reliability, buy a decent motor with a good history.

i second the thing about some 9.9 engines being a detuned 15. i've a 9.9 suzuki and all i need is a different carburettor and i think injectors to turn it up to 15.
will be looking into upgrading it, some time in the future so might post a thread on how i get on.
