I think static and dynamic apnea are two different worlds

Personally I hate static apnea and as such I burn out at 1.10; however, in dynamic I go for 1.10 (which would be more in terms of static) and I don't burn out as much.

What's going on here?

Thanks for your replies. Gerard.

hi gerard

first i´d like to know how you do statics and what your breathup/warmup is.

so far i´ve never heard of anybody not having longer static than dynamic times.

some sinple points:
when doing statics be calm and relaxed. find a comfortable position (sitting, lying, floating, whatever) where you can totally relax your muscles.
spend a while breathing slowly concentrating on loosening tension in your body.
take deep breath and hold it.
afterwards rest for a few minutes and do another one.

i personally do sets of 3 or 4. usually each one will be longer.

you´ll find heaps of threads to techniques and training tips for statics.

i would be extremely surprised if you wouldn´t increase your static to way past dynamic time.

enjoy

Hey Gerard , it would also help if you change your attitude towards statics . Remember the mental aspect is quite important .
I am sure as you improve you will start enjoying it ...
Judging from your dynamic time your statics will probably improve quite dramatically once you get in the groove .
Keep us posted .

A matter of love?

Hola Gerard,
I have the same problem (but less dramatic), I don't like static either. I love CW and my training is dedicated to it. But as I'm training for the Nationals in november I have to make static again.
Is very hard, because I make it without any emotion. My PB is 5'26" and 2 years before was 5'24" as you can see little improvement.
I start to try mixing Dynamic with static: 25 Dynamic. 1 minute static and 25 mts. dynamic, because that is more fun to me that lie down like a death man.
My brother loves static apnea an he hit 7'57" .
So I think is a matter of love, If you don't like it, you will never be the best.
What I'm doing now?.
Every time I start to practice, place "mentally" my self in Turkey and wish with all my heart to be there next year. I feel more motivated and my times has improved (but not much).
Try something that make the static training more enjoyable and tell me if it works for you

It's a question of taste

Simply, I do not like static training, period. Why because I get bored and I m too much of an "hyperactive" type of person. As I am not interested of freediving with the use of any mechanical aids it is simple to see where I am going to.

No matter what some may say, STATIC TRAINING WILL NOT IMPROVE YOUR DYNAMIC PERFORMANCE. It may help psychologically but that's it, period. I personally train my mind while doing dynamic training, I relax while I dive and try to think that I am somewhere else, in fact the other day when I reached 50 m in the pool I hit my head against the pool's wall (something really silly which could have triggered something worse). I guess wher you are in the "blue" some principle applies, relax, dive, relax and fly.

Regards, gerard.

hi gerard

i prefer diving to doing statics as well. no doubt. but doing some static training has some positive effects on my dynamics (for me at least).
when doing statics i´m usually more relaxed and therefore can concentrate on my body and my breathing better. this helps me in dynamics to be able to relax quicker and to focus more on body position and movement. i found this to be very helpful with my progress.
i also do statics as a warmup before going into the water which also helps greatly with my divetimes. i just get cruising earlier with this.

i don´t do statics for the sake of it but mainly as extra training for diving. especially when i don´t have access to the sea. nothing beats beeing underwater.

and by the way, it´s nice to shut up for a while.

cheers

roland
