after a year break just do to money reasons and school(hey i'm a teenager) i'm thinking of actually finally starting to spear... so just wanted to let you all know i'm back after a long time?

haha from germantown... i just got done with work actually.. No i dont freedive or scuba, haha i know how to swim though... and can dive pretty good, hold teh breath pretty good....

How much do fins and wetsuits cost? i definitely need fins, but depending on cost of wetsuit that might get second place to fins.. i dunno

you guys use bungie's right instead of say reels???

Hey joker. At this point you can probably hold off on the wetsuit until like mid to late september. Thats when I stopped diving last year because of how cold the water was getting w.o a wetsuit. Fins are a necesity. a good wetsuit will be at LEAST $200. Depending on how you get it, and how nice you want it to be. A $200 suit can probably get you through 6-8 months of the year. Open cell will take you through the rest, but its a tough penny to swallow. Not very many of the guys on here have reels. Pinggene was the last one I KNOW to have had a reel. Whopperhead had one, but got rid of it in favor of using a float as a fish fighting tool. I dont use either really although I have a float.

Joker- most of your gear you should get through JIMDOE2YOU (member on this site) he owns his own shop in FL and is really good to us Deeperblue members. What size shoe do you wear? How tall are you and how much do you weigh? I might have a NEOPRENE suit you can have in the summer months. But for SEPTEMBER till JUNE you'll want a 5mm OPEN CELL. Get good Freediving fins - Ice Fins are Great! C4's are the best (but cost $350)

I've used a reel, but the floatline connected to the gun and the muzzle bungee/shot line is much less hassle. If I were diving near a boat and could toss the fish right in or put my stinger on my belt I might use it more. But really since 99% of the time I need a float anyway, clipping the gun to my float line is easier to manage with less tangle. Unirdna clips his floatline to his belt and just holds on to his gun and has the muzzle bungee rig.

Whatever you find works best for you.

Omer Millenniums will be about $150 I think. Not sure on the ICE fins.

For spearfishing your prolly better off with a plastic fin. There are a lot of rocks and such. C4's are super nice, but will chip on rocks and such on the bottom. The ICE are around $250.

I looked at Jim's site, he sells Beucahut fins too, for $120. I don't know how they are, never had them or read reviews.

It may as well be InLand.

I have 2 wraps of line for my shot line. I could probably do with 1 wrap, but I like having the range.

Joker- You can have my 3mil Akona 1-piece. It's not a Good Freediving suit- but it will work till about september. Give you time to save up for a 5mil Open Cell.

Fins: CRESSI 3000 are about $89.00 NEW - They should work well and last a long time.

ILDiver stands for ILlinois Diver. This guy is a freak. He drives 4 hours to dive/spearfish in WI. He's a Good guy and know ALOT. He might be able to get you some deals on equipment too.

whopper- i PMed jimdoe2you and got a bunch of questions in response- one of which would be how deep am i diving- so how deep do you find you are normally diving?

also he asked me how much lead i use- well i have no idea- how would i respond to that?

Most spearing in WI is around 10' or less. There could easily be 30' dives. I'm 6'4" and weight 220lbs. I use a lot of lead in WI. Since we don't dive real deep up there, the wetsuit does not compress a lot, so staying on the bottom is a pain. I wear, about 16 - 20lbs for most dives up there with my 5mm suit and I'm still pretty buoyant. If I'm going deeper on all my dives I can take some weight off my belt.

what do you mean when you say you use 2 turns of line for the line off your gun?

The line goes from the shaft, up to the muzzle and over the shaft to lock it down. Then it goes back down the barrel to the line release, back up the barrel. Some people stop there and hook to the bungee, one wrap. I wrap it around the line holder and back down to the line release and back up to the bungee, two wraps
