I'm new to spearfishing and I'm thinking about getting one of these two guns, fellow spearos' can you give me some advise/opinions on these spearguns, thank you.

I am in much the same boat. I am thinking of getting an Omer Cayman HF2 @100cm

I live in Australia and will be using it for shore fishing, I figure if I get it a little bit longer I can still use it in Blue Water if I progress to that stage.

I would be keen to hear peoples opinions on this gun if they have any experience with it.

You are lucky being in the US, things are a good deal cheaper! I plan to purchase most of my gear via the internet from shops in the UK and US.

Hi Chris,

i am just about to order some gear from subprof and going to buy among other stuff a Cayman 100cm HF2. Best price I could find on the net so far.

OMER CAYMAN HF 2 SPEARGUN

Hi Mate,

Subprof is where I am going to get my gear from as well. The prices there even with shipping are nearly half of the prices here. I plan on getting the HF2 as well.

I am keen to hear what you think of the gun when you get it. Be sure to tell me how long postage takes too.

Cheers,

Chris

chris, not sure if you realise it but a 100 is nowhere near long enough for blue water, (unless you double wrap with extra rubbers)

just a heads up.

I'm also considering these two. The Omer Cayman ET or XXV Gold are working out similar in price to the Cressi Geronimo Elite depending on where you order from. I'm looking for something around 80 or 85cm, accurate and reliable. I know a reel and the various muzzle options are probably not necessary on a first gun for use in Irish waters but I like the idea of being able to"grow into" a gun and try the different options. If I end up getting a bigger gun in the future for trips abroad I will be better able to decide on configuration.
So which is to be? Opinions greatly appreciated!

Hi spudlington try posting on the ireland spearing page as well. I dont spear so have no idea but the lads have been about a bit and would know what would suit Irish waters.

Cheers
Are you heading to Dive Ireland next weekend? Hope to do a course this year but doing a few work-related diving courses this year so have to see how free-time and funds are after them!

yeah will be there on sat and sun and have me uniform on for some advertising, tried for a stand but a bit too expensive for me on my own. will be bringing in imersion spear stuff in the future currently sell the suits and fins etc through the online shop. should be having an open weekend in may as well with no charge just advice and some chilling out yoga stuff etc.

Excellent
If I make it there next weekend I'll keep an eye out, didn't expect to be here this month so didn't look into a stand. Will be doing similar to you I think!

further to your comment spudlington the ET is one hell of a gun iv got 2 and OH MY GOD this gun will hit anything you shoot at seriously all my gear is omer and rob allen but my omer cayman carbon and ET guns are the nuts and with the fetures of the ET with the shaft inbeded in the barrel this gun will take a green horn and turn him into a spearo :)

While that is true for almost everything else, a lot of spearing gear, specifically European & South African, is actually significantly more expensive in the USA. Presumably because of additional shipping costs and, possibly, import duty. Also, the few US-made speargun products tend to be high quality and/or heavy duty products ("woodies") intended for large fish. So count yourself lucky (I know its hard, with "20 'cent" as chancellor, following hot on the heels of 12 years of Brown & Darling). There is also a wider range of European spearfishing products available here (some european products don't make it out to the USA, the Omer XXV for example). Also bear in mind, that it is easier than ever to buy elsewhere in the EU if you can't find the right deal here in the UK.

I've been using the Omer XXV for several years now. It's been a delight so far, better and more robust than I dare hope. I'm sure the Omer Cayman/HF/HF2 are similarly satisfying (and that's what the feedback I've seen confirms). Haven't heard much about the the Cressi Geronimo but it looks good - Cressi make good dive masks and the cheaper Cressi Commanche was/is legendary for its price/performance, being used by the World champion at the time it came out.

The super-slim, super-light Omer XXV isn't really suitable for beginners though IMHO, too many options for somebody who doesn't yet know how to rig a speargun. The gun was accurate from the factory as far as I could discern. I switched the good but sharp Omer metal articulated wishbone for a somewhat simpler, lighter and more finger-friendly (safer) Dymeema-cord wishbone, as I'd grown accustomed to them from using my old RA railgun. I think it may have affected accuracy a tad, causing the spear to shoot slightly higher than before (or perhaps its just me?). Probably not an issue for the Gold variant, which has a rail, just like the RA.

Also, personal opinion, I reckon for longer sizes, 90cm+, the more substantial anatomic Cayman handle (does it still ship with regular & anatomic handles?) might be beneficial when dealing with the leverage of a longer barrel. The T10 handle of the XXV is slim and flat - which works great in the 75cm size I use most often.

Enclosed track sounds like a bad idea to me but I know others would disagree, Foxfish is/was very keen on them - each to their own. There is much to be said for simplicity, and this seems like an unnecessary complication. Also why does it have adjustable muzzle weights? All the spearguns I have encountered (except perhaps the Cayman HF/HF2) are muzzle heavy and could benefit from additional muzzle buoyancy, rather than weight - I've used a cork to provide this in the past (Spaghetti tells me this Italian spearos also do this sometimes).

My brother-in-law bought an Omer Cayman 85 while I bought the Cressi Geronimo Pro 95 (no reel). Within little time we realized that the Cayman wasn't up to the task. It had a trigger mechanism malfunction within days and never quite shot straight from the start. He purchased another gun from Omer (Kanaloa 85 or 90) and has had to do lots of repairs while my Geronimo has been kicking a** and taking names without missing a beat. Now he only keeps the Cayman around as a backup while making the best of things with the Kanaloa.

Long story short: Cressi FTW!

Yup! Cressi Spearguns FTW.
Personal speargun of choice = Geronimo elite every time.
Show me a more accurate speargun and I'll eat my hat!
