Acquiring interesting Russian production spearguns such as the "Taimen" and the "Vlanik" has not met with any success as their manufacturers either do not sell outside the country or appear very unwilling to do so.

I think I have now found out why, the Russian postal system is apparently completely unreliable due to opportunistic thieves who take goods with impunity. About 3 months ago I sent a spearfishing magazine with companion spearfishing DVD on the front cover in a heavy duty envelope to an address in Moscow, the address was written both in English and Russian on the envelope and was correct in every detail as it was taken directly off a website listed address given out for the purpose of receiving mailed communications in Moscow. Delivery time was estimated at 15 days at most by the post office here, but after a month it had simply disappeared without trace. After a couple of weeks had elapsed I tried again, this time with only the spearfishing DVD and not the magazine in a more compact cardboard mailer specifically for posting DVD/CD's. The exact same spearfishing DVD as before, just another copy of it. That too disappeared into the ether and over a month and a half has now passed! So assuming the same thief did not want two of them the second DVD was taken by someone else. Bear in mind I sent the same package to the USA and it arrived in about a week and had not been tampered with in any way, so the goods are not being stolen in Australia.

So if guys in the Russian postal system will steal a spearfishing DVD (twice) you can imagine what would happen with a speargun, there would be no hope of your receiving it and their manufacturers being realists, I assume that is why Russian spearguns do not come out of Russia unless as a bulk shipment organized by a formal business enterprise with the associated checks and balances. Examples of the latter would be the "Seabear" (Pirometr RP), the "Prizm" (RPB-1M) and the "Kobra" hydropneumatic which have been sold in some quantities in the West in recent years.

I hope the Russians will sort this out...

Somehow I think that nothing will happen until Russia routinely sells goods in the West, then there will be an incentive to improve the situation. The Ukraine is a different proposition as their spearguns can be imported and an example is the "Aquatech" range of hydropneumatic guns which have appeared on this forum.

The package was sent each time to Victor Doroganich, hardly an unknown person in Russia (he manufactures and sells his own high quality pneumatic spearguns)! Evidently some people must think it is OK to steal his mail, so I gave up on the idea of sending a third copy of the same DVD.

The Russian Postal System is exonerated, those missing items eventually turned up (many months later). Heartened by this I ordered a "Taimen" speargun from Chelyabinsk and after a very long wait it arrived today. I ordered it in October, so you need to be patient! Problems are navigating your item through Russian Customs (they are wary of anything that looks like a gun) and the postal handlers on the journey at unknown locations in-between. It seems that they have a penchant for putting any mail into surface mail despite what you paid for it. Both you and the sender at the other end are powerless to affect this situation, so you have to take what is on offer. Either that or pay double or more of the cost of your purchase including international courier service charges, that is if any of them will ship a speargun.

I should point out that the "Taimen" gun was dispatched very promptly, after making the payment both for it and the associated shipping. The time delays were caused by a short round trip through Russian Customs and back the first time because someone there rejected it, then a second attempt by separating the shipment into two "more acceptable" packages. (Don't ask me what the criteria are for being "acceptable"!) The plan was to ship the first package and wait for it to arrive before sending the second, although the first took so long I asked for the second to be sent anyway. As luck would have it no sooner had I made that request then the first package appeared here. The two packages separately making their way to Australia via the hold of a ship is what took all the time, even though the largest and heaviest package was clearly in an air transport mailing envelope (EMS)! The smaller package was the size of a text book and not very heavy at all, so should have gone straight into air mail. If it were not for the perseverance and assistance of the "Taimen" company then I would never have received the gun. They pretty much went out of their way to find a cost effective solution to shipping it to the other side of the planet!

If you live in Europe or the UK then you have no oceans to cross, so even if your shipment is via surface mail then that will involve trucks or trains and the transit times should be much shorter. If you are in the USA then your gun will most likely be coming on a ship like mine did. Evidently someone in the shipping/freight chain thinks that air mail stickers and other air freight indicators are merely package decorations with no real meaning.

The only solution is to send items there by dispatch courier.
Some companies( DHL, UPD etc) deliver packages from Poland to Russia.
But not to all destinations

We never send anything there by Russian mail.

If you want to import guns from there, you can do it via Poland. No problem at all.

:)

DHL quoted $400 to $450 to deliver the "Taimen", more than the cost of the gun! If Russian Customs rejected the shipment then that money would be gone, there are no refunds. So I would have had to pay another lot of shipping to try again. I already lost the first shipping amount, but fortunately that had not been that much as I received nothing for it. I took advice from the "Taimen" company, they knew more about it as they had been down a similar road before.

I sent the DVD's to the USA without problem if you read what I wrote earlier. My post is based on experience, not assertion. Plus the DVD's eventually made it to Russia when I sent them to a different address. I have a number of Russian spearguns and only one is a "dud" through careless machining, the others are all good.

many and many times i´d send and receive to and from russia stuff valued more than 3 k euro
nothing never was stolen

..about DVD .. just read the god damn the custom rules and regulations
they always care about information
for example not UPS not DHL will not accept any of ur dvd unless it declared.. means u must fallow some stupid procedure against ur privacy

anyway declared or not it go to pass to all sort cheking for encrypted data leak
Russians maybe just dont give %uck about ur dvd and send it directly to the garbage :D:ban if u not read and fallow customs rules and regulations

USA custom in this case will bug around suspected item nearly months as i remember

Actually the DVD's were returned here completely unopened, so Russian Customs never even looked at them. Once I had a new address they went no problems to the recipient. So you are talking about a problem that did not happen. Plus I did read the postal regulations first. This thread is about spearguns, but evidently you don't have anything positive to contribute.

Hi Pete,
Have you imported spearguns into Aus before? I wasnt sure if I was legally able to do so. I am keen on a H Dessault Carbon rig, but I cant find one in Aus. The only company I can find in Aus who stock them have no stock and might not for a while

Yes I have. There are no problems at this end, although you can run into the odd person here who will try and block your item as they don't know the rules. A phone call will soon sort this out as spearguns are routinely imported here. If you buy from a volume overseas seller then it is relatively easy, but long guns are expensive to ship, say over 42" in length, for airmail deliveries.

I have received no responses to my e-mails to Sergiy for some time, but I have not tried for more than 6 months, so try mailing him again. Unless you can find one that someone wants to sell the guns can only be obtained by ordering one from him. The guns are good, but heavy, so they don't float after the shot.
