Hey guys I'm new to the forums but I will be in Cairo for the next 4 months studying at the American University in Cairo. I brought a speargun down with me from San Diego and am trying to go fishing in the mediterranean while I am down here. I was planning on going to Alexandria and anywhere else on the North Coast with good spear fishing spots. Any one who knows the area I would love to hear from. I have a local cellphone and would be more than happy to meet up. I brought my fins, floatline, speargun, mask, snorkel, gloves, wetsuit top, and weight belt. My name is Will and thanks guys!

Hey Ross I am also going to Egypt but next month I've done some resource and everything I have found is that all types of fishing is BANNED why not just do some snorkeling and admire the wonderful types of fish that are in abundence there ?

Meh I just got back to Cairo after 4 days in the Red Sea. The free-diving was great and some guys offered to take me out spearing but for $200 USD which is a little much, especially for Egypt. Fishing is not banned along the Mediterranean coast and my family friend in Alexandria is taking me spearing on the 15th of Sept. so I will let you guys know how that goes. I have heard the vis is hit or miss but my friend said it's been pretty good.

Hi guys,
My name is Julien, I am going to live in Egypt for 4 years. I'll be in Cairo Oct 25th. I would like to know if you guys know a pool or club where I can work on my apnea.
I also would like to know if it is worth it to bring my spearguns. I used to fish in the indian ocean in the blue... And my equipment might not be adapted for the mediterranean sea.
About the red sea, does anybody (local or expat) knows if it is or not possible to spearfishing away from touristic places in the red sea.

Thank you all for your help and answers.

Julien

How was it ?
Tell us about your experience in Alexandria.

THanks

I ended up spearing in Ain Sukhna which is about an hour~hour and a half away from Cairo. I shot 2 medium guys (No pics sorry!) One was about 24 inches and the other one close to 30. I stayed near Porto Sukhna and just went down to the beach and walked around till I saw some shore reef and went out. Gave the fish to some local guys as I was getting out of the water cause I live in Cairo and the hotel didn't have a place for me to cook em. I'm going to Marsa Alam with some Egyptian friends of mine who say they've had great luck spearing down there so I will keep you guys updated. For the record however it is illegal to spearfish in all these areas I am talking about. BUT if you go out in the mornings you tend to find yourself all alone and if you rent a boat or have a friend that has one you can do just about anything as long as you don't run into the coast guard or flash your spear around.

And julien I'd bring a gun, there are plenty of places to spear down here you just have to know some of the people/places. I'm studying at school down here and depending on where you are going to live in Cairo there are plenty of pools that you can go to. I'm living in Zamalek right now and if you decide to bring a gun we should meet up and take a trip I will be here until January 1st

Ok great!!
I'll take my equipment then!!!
Do you know what you risk if been caught by the guards?

I am looking for a place in Zamalek or Maadi, do you happen to know anybody that could help me find something good at a decent price??

Looking forward to spearfish and free dive again, it's been a long time for me...3 years...

Enjoy and take care.

Julien

Sounds good. You probably risk a bribe at most to be honest it's still decently corrupt down here even after the revolution. Zamalek and Maadi are nice places and yeh one of my roommates is egyptian and could definitely help you talk to the landlord to get a better rate. I'll send you a pm with my email and get the details from me there. I'll ask around about available places too.
