increasing your working time underwater

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.

I am interested in anyone's ideas on how to increase your working time underwater. Not static, but actual work, could be dynamic, cwt, spearfishing,etc. What exercises do you think help the most?The least? I look forward to reading your replies.
 
Tables for sure, O2 and CO2 resistance. And then walk Apnea so the muscles are familiar with low O2/high CO2 operation
The best I think is to DIVE DIVE DIVE. Of course people who spend the most time in water have the best results
Look at people like Mandy or Martin and many others who have jobs underwater. They became fish long time ago..
 
i would have to say the one tip i got that helped my actual bottom time a lot was treadmill work...I learned this from a MMA guy

first get in decent cardio shape;)
then add breathhold intervals on the treadmill
then mix breathhold intervals with running with a snorkel in (it makes a huge difference)
just be careful to not push to hard cos passing out on a treadmill still sucks
 
Hi Tony,

Its not exactly an exercise, but it sure increased my working time. Have you looked into the minimal- subnormal- "undetectable" breathup? Check the last few pages of the Exhale diving for "average" divers thread. It seems to work for full lung diving as well as exhale.

I got excited when it jumped my average dive time by more than 1/3. Not sure it will work as well when you have to start exercising before your DR sets in good, but for stuff like Carrera's (98 m ?) cw, it seems to work fine.

Your pardon sqnips, my memory is getting bad. Hell of a series of dives any way you take it. Wish I could talk to the guy about how he developed his breathup, not to mention a few other things.

I can tell you that Davide's recipe is simple: dive 5 to 7 hours a day 5 days a week in the 30 to 40m range spearfishing. The best thing for extending dive time is lots and lots of diving.
 
More diving!!! Could not agree more.

Azapa, did Carrera do anything in his breathup other than minimal breathing? A few deep breaths? anything?

There was very little to see or hear and I was 1m away. Davide would sit on the platform, upright, meditating for about 5mins. He slips into the water about 1:30 before his official top time, and, face down, breathes through his snorkel. I could not hear the breathing. He the spits it out and dives. I could not even hear the final inhale. Not sure what warmup he does as the warmup lines were some meters away and safetied by another couple of divers.

Sorry there is no magic to tell, but maybe that is the magic?

my recipe: 8 to 9 hours a day in the office, but yet it does not seem to work as well as Davide's...

@Azapa: Davide practices really serious Yoga, at the instructor course he offered as trainer every morning for us, but very few of us had the bravery to wake up at 6 with him with a "6 hours in the water" day ahead

the magic lies inside of him, you can see it on his face :)

What an inspiration/enigma Davide Carrera is.

No packing, no obvious breathe up, mask, takes final breath via snorkel on stomach, no mouthfill, clean recoveries, and to top it off, he stops at 99m when it seems like he could have very well done 100m.

Does he equalize hands-free all the way down?

I was trying to find that pic of Davide on the VB site where he is ascending from a dive celebrating just before he hit the surface but the pic seems to have disappeared.

Anyways, what I noticed about that shot of him was his diaphragm and stomach was all sucked in. I understand that one's stomach would look like that at depth, but just before you hit the surface? Anyone know what that's about?

I guess there really is no substitute for diving all the time.

i can tell you why he decided to stop @99: he simply wants to make the 100 in the mediterranean, assisted by his very best friends, first of all Umberto, i suppose

as if he eq hands free all the way down, i don't know, i never seen him eq with hands in sharm, but we were in shallow water (30-40m) compared to his recent dives

Interesting to note this statement by Davide: "even if I think spirituality and being in contact with nature are much important thing, I know everything counts, so I give attention to my equipment..."
