Croatia Island of Vis diving

Was: Info Croatia Island of Vis 1st week of Sept. 2006

I am on vacation on the Island of Vis next week and was wondering if anyone could recommend any dive boat operators who understand Freedivers, shops, locations or any other tips for freediving on Vis.

I mostly want CWT freediving, 10-30m (have some snorkeling friends) And some underwater photography.

Thanks for any info you have.

Report Croatia Island of Vis 1st week of Sept. 2006

OK so here is the report. I was on the Island of Vis stayin in Kut, which is right next to Vis City which is the main Ferry port on the Island. Overall nice visablity, not a lot of large sea life, depth is no problem to find, but temperatures get pretty cold with depth. Nice to play around in, would not recomend it to spearos, a number of nice shore dives for the vacationer.

Shore Locations:

Vis Harbor

skip it, too murkey, lots of see grass not a lot of life. 5-8m visability

Ceska Vila (The big yellow house)

Pretty good if you are up for a swim to the east. It is a rocky beach entry, in a protected cove, lots of sun bathers, bad music, and a snack area. 10-15m visability

Drops off pretty fast from the shore, once you get past the little bay that is the beach -40 readily available, but close to boats at some points.

U Sbrena, cove by Rukavac

This was another rocky beach, the best visablity was to be had ner the point, again an easy swim to -30m. Visablity was 15-20m once you got out to the point. Temperature was 26C on the surface 16C at -20m. Ground cover not that exciting, good blue photogrpahy shots with lots of little fish

Boat Locations:

There are two dive boat operators on the island. They are SCUBA specialized, we failed to find a good harbour where we could negotiate boats to take us out freediving. We went with ANMA because the guy at the selling the trips for the other shop, when asked where they were going just said "in the water." People dove in full body 3-5mm wetsuits generally. Temperatures at depth were as low as 16C

Greben Island

This is on the East side of the Island of Vis, not far from shore. Had excellent visablility 20-25m, and depth was no problm, the inshore side is about 20m deep, the see side drops to over 55m in no time flat. A bit of current, more life more ground cover. I did both freediving and SCUBA here.

SCUBA

The most interesting part of this dive if not doing nitrox is to stay on the shallow side, and there is a ledge cave at -20m that is fun to explore

Hrid VELI VOLIC Island and Lighthouse

only did this SCUBA (second SCUBA dive of the day) the island is pretty much a wall down to -40m. Much darker than the previous dive and visablity not quite a good, lots of nice ground cover at -5-10m There was a nice Eel
