installing butt

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Draw lines that allow you to make your square block cross section into an octagonal one - then shave.

The gadget below can help you draw the lines. Use a spokeshave to remove the rest of the material down to the lines along the shaft. Eight sided. Repeat to make a sixteen sided, then round it out. Dry run on a test piece of wood is recommended.

Though I used a jack plane instead of a spokeshave, I used this method to make oars for my fishing skiff.

okay i thought of an idea to round the wood. could i use a hole cutter on a drill and cut off the excess wood?

I never seem to have trouble installing butt -- however, losing wieght is a struggle. :t

i tried it out on a piece of wood and it worked well but i ended cutting it into a octogon with a coping saw then i sanded it round with a disk sander
