Introduce me to monofins

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.

I would love some input about what would be the proper monofin for me. I'm 5'7 155 lbs. and use C4 Falcon 30. Best for the money-intro fin? Used fin-older model? Best new fin-state of the art? Thanks
 
I recommend a Waterway classic fin, middle distance, model 2. New they are around E 125,- . Second hand should be cheaper, but just as good.
The classic fin is light weight and has no foot pocket angle, making it a bit more demanding to technique and flexibility. But this is a good thing as your first goal is to learn how to monofin, and developing the flexibility and muscle memory.

After a year you know how to swim, and you'll have developed your personal preferences. Then it's time to buy a competition level monofin, with an angle, wings etc.

You can still use the classic for for training, playing around. You can also borrow it to others without fear of damaging your favourite, personal, competition fin.

This is my current view after freediving for 7 and monofinning for 6 years.

I was looking to the webpage but have found that they have various models into the classic monofin... any advice? thanks
 
The model, relates to the size of the blade. 1 is big, 2 is medium, 3 is small (children).

I recommend 2, because it's lighter to use to beginners (much less technique and muscle power).

Also in order to get to learn the needed shoulder flexibility, I found lately, thanks to my swim teacher education, that doing the back crawl swim stroke is extremely effective.
So as a warm-up to your monofin practive I would say do 200m back crawl, or a bit more.
Other good exercises are with small fins and snorkel pushing a board monofin style. Swimming on the surface, on your back, monofinstyle, holding a 500g weight or 1 kg in extended monofin position arms. Swimming pyramids schedules, varying speeds from 50 to 90% speed.

I think Carlos Coste did his 102 CWT WR (first WR through the 100m!) with a WW Classic fin.

How does the weight help Kars when monofinning on the back?

(I am asking because when we do this exercise without a weight, our instructor tells us to make sure the hands are level with the surface of the water and not lifted, is the weight to help achieve this?)

The weight helps to stretch your shoulders, helps you to keep your arms level.
But best exercise for my shoulder and upper back flexibility is -with distance- back crawl.

- I wish I knew that one when I started! - though is was given al sorts of good stretching tips mind you.
 
Thanks for the tip Kars - I am hopeless in back crawl (well I am a hopeless swimmer in general lol). Will give it a go when I can get some pool time

I was hopeless in back crawl too, 50m was already a challenge...
Make sure you bring up the hand next to you hip out of the water just before the other in front dips in with the pink. Arms travel overhead and your shoulders rotate.

Addition:
To prevent sinking, rotate arms faster, flipper your legs too, keep the belly up. Maybe use flippers if you cannot manage without.

Thanks for the tips - will give it a go. It's quite embarrassing as I usually just lose momentum and start sinking lol
