To all spearfishermen/women,

As the new chairman of the British Spearfishing Association (BSA) and new members on the committee we wish to invite all spearfishermen/women, new to the sport, old hands, old members and potential new members to the BSA national competitions this year (2007).

This year the BSA is striving to make the national competitions more open and a friendlier atmosphere. With your entrance fee you will be automatically entered into the BSA raffle. This will give you the chance to win top spearfishing equipment at every competition this year. You don’t have to be a member of the BSA to enter the competitions.

Also at every competition there will be various equipment sponsors offering the best in the world spearfishing equipment at knockdown prices.

This is a good chance to gain valuable knowledge and experience, meet new potential dive partners, take a look at how the best spearfishermen in the country set there gear up, ask questions as to why, what, where and how. It also gives you the chance to find out about local spearfishing clubs in your area. Also after each competition food and drink is provided, this gives you a chance to socialise and expand your dive network.

Our Public Relations officer will be asking questions and seeking new material for the Crystal Clear magazine which every BSA member receives. The articles produced for the magazine will be put forward to the top international and World wide spearfishing magazines. Not only the top spearfishermen/women in the country but new members will be outlined in the articles.

Please come and seek the BSA committee members out at the national competitions, this will give you the chance to be introduced to other members and broaden your horizons on the sport. All contact information can be gained by visiting the BSA website at Spearfishing - contents or contact the BSA Chairman Glenn Cooke at igneous59@hotmail.com

Quote from the Chairman “the new committee this year want to raise the profile of the sport in this country and try and gain some new members to the BSA. Sponsorship is the key to our sport and if we can get some major sponsors, the sport in this country can gain a foothold in the European championships and even compete on a more level playing field in the World championships. In order to do this we need to support and produce new and junior champions”

Glen, whilst I wish you all the best in promoting spearfishing in the UK, I feel the BSA has a long way to come to get itself in line with the 21st century. It has been a long time since I have left a message on your forum, the last time being 2004 when a senior member of staff from deeperblue was told in no uncertain terms to f... off and stay away from the BSA as well as her friend yakdiver and myself. A friend of mine still bothers to add the occasional post and has offered on your forum to submit an article for your mag on fishing up here in North Wales, this was never taken up, or has there been any willingness to welcome his presence on your forum.

As you quite rightly assume there are many spearos in the UK who are not members of the BSA, I personally know 18 northerners who got together during the afore mentioned incident in 2004, none of whom have the slightest will to try to reconcile any differences with your membership.

I apologise for sounding so negative but it is genuinely the feeling of many of us northerners but I would agree that the only way to raise the profile of spearing in the UK is by standing together as a whole. I hope that you as the new chairman can persuade your membership to be more welcoming to new or potential new members.

Sincerely, all the best

Hi Pastor,
First of all let me apologise to you and anyone that was offended for the incident that happened on the BSA forum in 2004. I am well aware of what happened and the circumstances after. We as an association have decided to not let this kind of thing happen again and will expell any member who decides to use our forum as a slanging match or worse. Please again accept our apologies.

I can understand your feelings, as at that time I was not the Chairman but just a member of the BSA, and myself refused to get involved with the forum and certain members. Our concern now is that the BSA forum is part of the public view of our sport and we need to make sure this kind of negative attitude to other members or non members does not happen again.

The new committee of the BSA is forward thinking and want to bring the sport up to the 21st century starting this year. We know that in the past there have been many negative aspects to the BSA but if you give the BSA another chance I think you will be (I hope you will be) surprised at the positives we are trying to achieve.

It is going to be a difficult year for us trying to gain new senior members, junior members and women members, but if we can get the ball rolling this year I think it will get better.

If you still have access to the guy that wrote the article on North Wales Spearfishing, then I promise you it will go in the Crystal Clear magazine this year.

Again I apoligise for the incident that happened in 2004 and hope that this goes some way to maybe changing your mind on the BSA.

Regards
Glenn Cooke (BSA Chairman)

Hi Spearheads,
Yes you can enter the BSA comps as a junior and it is free of charge for juniors. You will be given a float number as soon as you join the BSA.
Yep you are right about the BSA forum, why dont you start a new thread and see if you get any replies, its what we need to get people involved wiith our forum?
Have you been spearing long? are you a member of a local club?
The Crystal Clear magazine will be more interesting this year with better articles, equipment reviews and member outlines etc.
Hope to see you at the comps, seek me out and I will introduce you around.
Regards
Glenn

I have been spearfishing for 3 years . I'm not a member of a local club , not sure were the closest club is , I'm in torquay.
I will fill in the membership form when i get back next week as i am of skiing again today:) .

Good luck with your plans for the BSA - here's a photo from the past (Weymouth carnival 1958), this was before the BSA split from BSAC and yes that's a conger on the bonnet!!

Hi NeveraDullDay.

Pardon my ignorance but it's a long time since I was involved in competitions. The BSA is not part of BSAC? You (BSA) run the national competitions? Who, if anyone now keeps the national records? In my day it was the BSAC. If you keep records are they only for your members or club members rather than us independants? What happened to the old records held by the BSAC which were open to anyone?

I'm not against spearing competitions but I think you have your work cut out in todays politically correct climate. Still, good luck to you.

Dave
