Since both my parents have been involed in watersports so to have I, all my life (I think I got my first mask when I was 4!) But what I have notice recently ie. since I have gone to college, is that everybody my age has little to no interest in the great outdoors, especially the sea. All the people I know just want to get drunk and stay inside.

Please tell me it's not just me, becasue it's very depressing having nobody your own age do the things you love.

And if there is anybody from Ireland thats my own age PLEASE get into contact with me.

Thanks,
Jason.

You are in Ireland and you want to meet people who are not interested in getting drunk?
Well good luck.
A quest for rocking horse sh!t might be easier.
(No offense Irish guys, but . . . )

This forum is the best way to meet people from Ireland with the same interests

Hi Jason, I actually think we are starting to change albeit a little bit. Think of it as you being a trend setter anyway. Adventure sports are on the rise and maybe its as I get older but I drink f all at the moment. ( i dont even have a drink as i type this) did you make contact with kieran down your way, he said he was going to regisiter here anyway.

Yes Jason you're right, and it's sad that most young people follow the corporate suggestions so well. Being told to have contact with your 'friends' all the time. We're being told everyday to have this superficial, base life of sex, violence, drugs and work. These people are considered safe, predictable and dependent. Sheeple say some. They don't travel, explore, learn, develop skills, grow mentally, develop judgement skills, become a complete, competent, balanced, versatile independent adults. You see it's rather costly to mislead such individuals, impossible having them do shitty dehumanising jobs. Oh and they even may start to question things like, paying tax - protection money, mis-leadership and the status quo.

But Jason, how would you sell the idea of outdoor adventure to your friends?
Why should they try getting out of their comfortably numbness and join you?

Kars--you're a closet anarchist/revolutionary! :martial I'm impressed!

I always took my girls camping and into the outdoors. The oldest (who is about to be 25) when in late teens went kicking and screaming:naughty--literally--:headcame to get her own tent and gear and "guided" her college chums on camping outings and still wants to coordinate our trips when she's off. Wifie and I are going with youngest this spring to Big Bend as "camp stewards" for her final hurrah on Field Biology course. I'll take on camp cook & chores for 20 students to free them up for hiking and observation.

Lead by example. It may not seem it at the time but it will be noticed and have an effect. If not, drop'em off in the deep woods to cull the gene pool. :friday

None taken as thats my point, I can count on one hand the amount of friends that I have that don't drink at all. The drunken fighting Irish is not a sterotypical thought, it's just accuarate :D.

And Fergus, Kirean never contacted me and I don't have his number/ contact details. Could you please send them to me as I would be very grateful.

Jason.

It's easy to play on stereotypes and take a national characteristic and blow it up a bit.
In reality I have no idea if the Irish do drink more per person than other countries.
I've worked with an Irish alcoholic, three pints of Guinness for lunch, four or five for tea and half a bottle of scotch for supper, nice bloke he was too.
Also I had an Irish granny, a Stoneman from Cork, who never touched a drop of booze in her life.
So my post was just playing-up, really not serious.

Back to the topic though, I don't think it's a simple either/or type of problem.
I was a serious climber, walker, camper type and still loved to go out to pubs and nightclubs and get pissed.
Agbiv is right, it's all about planting seeds and exposing people to as many different experiences as possible.
That way as your life and circumstances change, you have a broad base of things to draw on to make decisions about lifestyle and leisure activities.

Hi Jason,

Have to say that I've felt pretty much the same way that you have described on more than one occasion. Was pretty lucky in college that i was involved in a sports club which did not come under the umbrella body of the drinking club (as i found many clubs do). A good example was the sailing club, from which i got more emails about nights out and the limited availability of club jackets which were bar/nightclub sponsored than all other clubs put together. However the ability to accept new members and include people or even do ANY actual sailing was very very poor.
Rant over!

Looking back, it seems that what I did was to involve myself in several sports, with one main one and several side shows. This way you meet far more people than just being involved in one social group. This should give you a greater chance of having non-booze based social events.
So to recap: one main social group preferably a sport which does not have a strong drinking culture (maybe Rowing, cycling, triathlon) supplemented with other clubs where you play a guest role and where much less input is needed on your part eg. societies which do not have a drinking culture or sports clubs where you have a vague interest. This means that you have your main group of friends in the main club, and access to non-alcohol related social events in the other clubs.

Anyhow, my advice would be to try and seek out either sports clubs where boozing is not tolerated, or infiltrate the international students' society, as they generally do not suffer from the same level of social dependence on alcohol.

My infactuation with the sea would be on par with that man in the video :) And thanks for the advice on the clubs.

There isn't enough room outside for everyone in my opinion, haha, leave them indoors and come diving with the hardcore minority, its better when its less crowded :)
