Hi all, new to this forum and to be honest I have never dived before but got interested in static apnea recently and thru lurking around here, learned an invaluable amount of information from this forum.

I read somewhere while lurking (can't remember what thread :mad:) that your brain gobbles up most of your oxygen. I read in another thread that you can do little gimmicks like thinking about good memories or going thru the alphabet etc. to distract your body from wanting to breath. So thinking about these two things made me think, does doing little gimmicks in your brain waste more oxygen and if so, is it worth the momentary distraction of your brain?

lol holy crap I just jumped from 3:04 to 3:33 (static dry) by thinking of all the states and capitals of America! I guess distracting your brain and body is definetely worth it rofl

thats good news but if you go to practice on the water or pool always have a dive buddy ok dive safe
 
does anyone know other nice gimmnicks for relaxing? gonna try this with the alphabet. anything else nice? =D
 
There are many like visualising the colours of the rainbow, imagining a scene and visualising the surroundings. Personally I like starting to scan my body for tension from top to bottom, part by part, and relaxing each bit as I focus on it. If you have someone talk you through this, it's really nice and relaxing...
 
i heard that visualizing uses 20% of your brain energy and so many oxygen? isn't that true? the idea with scan the body sounds very nice :D my static fall down and i think it is cause i'm thinkng at the time and my pulse is high when i start my dive. but it's hard to relax during the dive until i get my contractions at circa 2:00 after the first contraction i think for me it's easyer to calm down and relax. ps: personal best : 3:30
 
Visualisation is supposed to be good for relaxation but I personally find it a bit tiring... I prefer to either just empty my mind or focus on sensations instead. I guess it depends what gets you to relax though, it's a very personal thing...
 
ok. i will try out many ways. make a few dives with other art of thinking. thx for your help simon
 
I often drift down with my eyes shut when going deep after passing 30' and just relax. I have the computer set to beep on depth so I don't hit the bottom then I just relax on the bottom and look up and chill for a bit and watch the surface.
 
What about mindfulness for freediving??

I tend agree... I like relaxing but never close my eyes in a pool or ocean; I am probably too comfortable out there but eyes closed in the ocean does not relax me! I suppose if tethered to a line and diving in a group it is less of a safety concern but it seems like not such a great habit. I see freedivers talk about diving this way..none of my biz and to each his own though. Training in a completely controlled enviro on dry land it makes no difference in my apnea ability.
