Just heard this on the morning radio: Shachar Bezalel (I think that's his name), a freediving spearo, went out fishing off Ashdod with his kayak early yesterday morning. Around 15:00 a fisherman friend passed by his anchored kayak, waited for several minutes for him to re-surface, then examined the boat and found fish that have been there for several hours. He immediately alerted the police and his family. Police and hundreds of volunteers have been searching the sea and along the beaches for the body since yesterday.

I saw it on the news yesterday! I'm sorry to hear that!
Apparently he was diving alone!!! :rcard
This should be a reminder for all of us!

The Med waters between Bat Yam and Ashdod claim a lot of drowning victims, year in and year out.

Not long ago a retired army Chief of Staff was drowned there when a rogue wave took him as he stood on a dock.

But then we shall continue to dive alone ourselves :head
(As I often do at my risk, even knowing that I'm risking my life :head :head :head ).

Condolences to his family, my heart cries for those persons.

:(
I dove with a spearfisher called Shachar from Ashdod about 2 years ago in Eilat, I hope it's not him. (I might never know)

UPDATE: they found his speargun on the bottom. A message on an Israeli borad says it was still connected to a 10kg grouper.

Its "ok" if your pb is 30 and you dive alone to a max of 15, but in his case he only recently achieved a pb of 32 (without staying at the bottom) and went spearfishing in 25m!!!

May he rest in peace!

Sorry, sands, I was so busy lately that I didn't see your post. Couldn't find an English link - even the hebrew media gave it very little attention. I always wonder at the difference in attention from the media - if someone gets murdered, they talk about it forever, but nobody seems to show much interest in an accident of any kind. Seems that outrage is much more interesting than plain sorrow for the media, and if there's no guilty party to point a finger at, then it's assumed to concern no one but family & friends (and a handful of spearos and divers, in this case).

My heart goes out to his family and friends.

Ofer

Regarding the lack attention on the media, I believe that this is a good thing since they would have probably started accusing the sport of freediving and the ministers (80% of which are clowns) would have started to submit laws regarding freediving.

May he rest in peace!

Deepthought,

regarding his pb it was said in the news article on channel 1.

He will be in the Lebanese waters by now.

Lets hope that this will not happen to us. but i will prephare to die this way than dying in a car accident or a plane crash.

Hold your life tight, Killer: you will not die diving, none of us will, because we have each other reminding to be prudent and never pull the string too rudely beyond the limits. I know, I know this is not enough, I know that shit happens...just a wish.

you are right spaghetti...we can always go to the fish market to choose the fish we want:) . but it is the nature of the human being...GREEDY:rcard
