Im a budget oriented guy and I just purchased a JBL Super Carbine..I live in Canada and will be hunting here mostly. Our waters have pretty low viz also. Is it a good beginer gun? Or did I just waist my hard earned Duckets?

It's certainly a cheap gun (leisurepro.com has it for $83). Personally I think, in this case you get what you pay for. I've never shot that gun but I've checked it out at a dive shop and I was rather unimpressed with its build quality. If you've never used another gun before though it may be just fine to start with. If you like that euro style of gun and you decide that the carbine is a little chinsy for you, you may want to consider a sporasub instinct. It's built a bit better but still cheap ($87) online. If you decide you really like spearing, start looking for something in the $150-$200 range, it will open up a whole new world of possibilities and those guns will last you forever. You can also buy used. I bought my 48" biller out of a trunk for $100 (it's around $350 new). Have used it for 5 years with no problems.
I'm not sure I would consider the carbine a waste of money, but I think you could have put that same cash into a much nicer gun for slightly more money. Use the crap out of it though and then upgrade.

Nooooo...... 8^0
It'll be alright, but do a search here on JBL to see why they are not great for freedivers.
I have a JBL you could have for fitty bucks. Take that one back. In fact i wont sell it you... you can use it, then use my real gun, then you'll know haha.

jbl isnt ALL bad. i had one for 12 years,(still have it actually) i actually just read that jbl is coming out with a new line of wood guns with alexander m6 triggers and they look really good. i'm not familiar with the model you got. i know some of their stuff is on the cheap end. but with little guns i'm not sure it matters that much anyway. you have to get REALLy close to stuff to kill it. i think at 24" from the muzzle, even a jbl is lethal to most smaller reef species.

One of the problems is that up here we shoot a lot of small fish, around 1lb. The rings on the JBL shafts shreds the fish :(

Just go ahead and try it and you will see. As Erik and jtkwest already said, JBLs are not entirely bad. I had one also. You can kill a lot of fish with your Super Carbine if you can get close enough to your prey, and you can do it with a little practice. Good luck.

Hey man, you will harvest fish with that gun. Keep the tip sharp. I still have a 450 magnum that I really like to use around structure such as jetties and bridge pilings. You can get your gun to shoot fast shafts by adding rubber. Switch to a low profile slide ring. The carbine is all gun, there is no extended tail tube behind the handle,as on the other JBLs. Just use it untill it explodes, by then you will be ready for something new. Stay active on this site, and the learning curve is astonishing.:wave

As said, I'll give you my JBL 22 with the new latex bands. It's got a lot of whack. It'll be good for Pike and Walleye- 3lbs+. The little Perch get destroyed by the stupid slide rings on the JBL shafts.
