First time I have seen a John Dory in the wild and not on my plate in a restaurant. I just couldn't spear it - he was too small anyway. What a remarkable animal and a real pleasure to come across. He was only 20 meters from a shingle shore and only 2-3 meters down off the East Devon coast - as others have said elsewhere on this forum he made a strange little bark or grunt when I got really close to him. They're not beautiful by any stretch of the imagination, just absolutely amazing to see.

P.S. Don't forget to change quality to 720p

Thanks for your comments. I couldn't agree more Macauley, they really are an outstanding fish to eat and with a ready made bulls eye they are also extremely easy to spear. But for me emotion got in the way of dinner or a starter at least, I reckon he was probably just over a pound in weight so best left alone anyway. I have also seen Trigger & Pipe fish in Pembrokeshire and I couldn't spear them either so I'm probably a bit of a softy. I'm very happy to take quicksilver - Bass, Bream & Mullet which I am convinced are sustainable due to their inshore nature's but anything unusual will usually make me go all warm & awe struck! What a wimp!
