One of my favorite things about freediving is independance. As a freediver, you typically shun the canned, guided scuba dive trip in which you are dropped of over a reef someone else has scounted out, folow the herd, then climb back in the boat for the ride to the all-inclusive resort. As a freediver you direct your own actions, seeking the blue nirvana that can only be obtained by a focused, relaxed, and un-hurried communion with the sea.
I think a kayak makes a great addition to a freedivers gear, because it provides even greater independance. If you take a kayak, you no longer need to charter a boat to get to a lot of great sites. And if you take a tent you no longer need to get a hotel. And if you take a speargun you no longer need to visit restaurants.
I first tried this out in southern Spain, near Malaga. My wife and I were renting a house for a month in a small town with a few miles of inaccessable coast nearby. Sit-on-tops were available on the beach. The diving among cliffs was great. Once back home in Texas I bought a Folbot 2 person folding kayak. I took this with my family to Akumal, Mexico and had some really great drift dives about 1/2 mile off shore. For my last trip I took the kayak and a buddy to Panama and went island hopping, sleeping in a tent and spearfishing for food.
Anyway, the pupose of this posting is to see if I can generate some interest in this kind of activity, as there doesn't seem to be to many folks doing it and I need to find some more partners.
