I joined Deeper Blue years ago when I first started spearfishing, lost touch, but I always enjoy checking in. Now I am embarking on a new adventure... sold the Panga and bought a kayak... kayak spearfishing in Sea of Cortez should be some wild good fun!

This morning, I was out on the water kayaking for the first time. I've been scouting kayak accessible dive spots, so I went for a test run to one of those. I only brought dive gear, no spear or fishing gear... I remember what it was like learning to manage spearing equipment in the water (like wrestling 3 octopus), I assumed learning to kayak will be the same. Start simple!

It was a 4 mile round trip, calm clear water, with a nice swim/dive... great way to start the day. I expected my arms/shoulders to burn, but surprised at how tired my abs/wrists/hands were... great little workout. Now I need to learn good kayak technique.

UPDATE: I have now been out kayak diving 8 times, each time tweaking my gear for efficiency and organization. I now feel very confident in both paddling and managing the dive gear, tomorrow I am going out with my reef spear gun (Riffe 110 Euro). One thing I don't have is a good fish bag... I will have to manage fish off a stringer for now.

What part of baja are you in? I just got back from Los Barriles last week and it was a struggle to land one cow dorado!

I generally prefer kayak to boating because of the cost of maintenance, and kayaking is a great workout. Plus the draw of spearfishing is that its a challenge, so why not make it even more grueling by self-propelling yourself to the hunting grounds via canoe? My kind of fun.
