Hi, from Whangarei in NZ. My name is James, and I have just joined the forums, and would really like to get into freediving / spearfishing at some point. I have SCUBA experience, and am a NAUI Master Diver. I haven't dived for a few years, though. Since I now live near the beach, the urge to get back into the blue is back. About me: I am a 39 yr old guy, married with 2 boys, and I am a hazardous substances officer. Other interests are photography (above water!) and archery (also above the water!)

Hi Poor Knight!
Welcome to our community, you have some great hobbies there not to mention your job!
Have fun looking around & ask away any questions...

Welcome mate ! I love your homeland. One of the best places I've ever dove,
along with some of the nicest people on the planet. Bay of Islands rocks,
and Lake Taupo (Huka Lodge) had some of the best fly fishing I have ever seen. There's a great bunch of guy's here.
Cheers, Don Paul

Hi James not sure where Whangarei is in NZ but if it's up north near the Poor Knights as suggested by your name then you are in a great spearing area.

Quite a few Kiwi's on DB so you should have some company.

Supposedly 2000 people have emigrated from Guernsey (my home) to NZ in the last 20 years. Popular place. My neice and partner will be visiting in a couple of months for an extended stay (their third). A few of my mates have also holidayed and it's on my wish list too.

So welcome to our DB community and enjoy :friday.

Dave.

O yeah & I forgot to say that my bro, OMD & I stated digging a hole in his garden 25 years ago.
If we keep going straight down for another 25 years & then pass on the hole for a few more generations, our descendants will eventually reach your home land!!
Well it is 9pm friday night = pub night!!

Welcome from Texas! Are the boys old enough to tag along?

Thanks everyone for the welcome! Indeed, Dave, I do live near the Poor Knights, which is rated as one of the world's 10 best dive sites. Don Paul, BoI is on my work route, about once every two weeks. :D

The boys are 7 and 9. I have a lot of hope for them to join in the fun. They are more than comfortable in the water, and both show an interest in the marine environment.

Foxfish - good luck with the Big Hole! However, there are several airlines that could save you some digging!

Welcome Poor Knight!

I wanted to go and dive Poor Knights in 2008 when I was in Auckland, didn't really have the time and also it was winter so I guessed I would probably freeze my guts off. Please post some pics, I love New Zealand, its an awesome place. :)
