Knives for nets

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
I picked up one of those diamond dust/steel plate things today, seems much better than the old sharpening stone, although more agressive (i got the fine one). also picked up a kitchen steel for finishing off the edge - got me a sharp little omer mini laser now - just waiting for the bigger brother to arrive in the post now...

O yeah & I still have Magpies - Tom I can leave it outside my front door or something like that?
I will be at home most of tomorrow though?
Jonny they work very well dont they?

Oh nuts! I'll try and make it up tomorrow morning mate, will give you a call first if I can, bit busy though.

That's what happens when a few spearos get together & not even any alcohol!!!
PS we had 9 ormers each.

i just wanted to say thanks for the advice on knives, etc.
my parcel of toys arrived in the post today including the omer maxi-laser which is the big bro to the 'mini' laser! here's a picture with the 2 knives for comparison; interesting that the maxi laser blade does not run the full length of the blade (yet) - i dont suppose it'll affect the strength/stiffness if i sharpen it a bit longer, to the hilt... (on the new diamond sharpener pad of course . Never had myself down as a 'knife' kind of person, but they do say that banjo and huntin' go together and i do like my banjos)...

Going to have to do some more net tests - more beachcombing required...

(i also ordered the technisub micro mask - superb, excellent fit (on land) and some other bits and pieces, thanks to mr X, Fondueset and others on the recommendation of the mask )

On the nets mate you did say the stuff you found was orange woven stuff didn't you?

Thats not the nets you'll stumble into, mainly because its bright orange and you'll see it! The stuff thats the problem is the clear mono nets, which you don't see. The plus side is you'll be able to cut the mono a lot easier than that woven stuff I'd guess.

Nice looking new kit Jonny, still think the shears idea is worth looking into?

Whats the mesh bag with 1lbs weight attached for Jonny?

rofl I'd say you needed a wider mouth bag then mate, they can sense when somethings up and out go the legs and claws, no way you'll get even one in there.

Drowning kittens?
He He, you already know my affection for cats! :naughty:martial

I think the shears have some merit, but i usually get frozen fingers towards the end of a swim and i worry about fumbling and dropping shears more than with a knife.

very observant Magpie... i dont know yet, needs some testing... hopefully that amount of weight will be just enough to keep me on the bottom in the shallows, where i'm usually slightly too buoyant. i also clip a 1lb weight on/off my belt depending on depth and whether i have the camera (buoyant +.5kg).
btw the weight came from micks, not mail order!! :head

You're right about the orange net, although i'm pretty sure it was mono, not braid - have to find some more. good point that it'll be the clear stuff out there.

Not sure how much difference 1lbs of weight makes mate, I vary by 6lbs depending on the depth I'm targetting, but if thats what works for you then (Though that doesn't explain why its attached to a bag?)

I meant more like woven mono sort of material, like them crablines we all used as kids before graduating to a bamboo from Sausmarez Park with some mono and a prized bait holder hook.

i have a spetton small knife that comes in a nice little holder witch straps to your leg or your arm it is pretty nice for about 30 bucks you can check it out on spettons home page and if you do happen to like it and get one tell them dusten sent you

Maggers I think you mean Corean (spelling)? Like the hand lines you can buy for the mislead tourist fisherman?

Never knew what its called but yeh, thats the stuff, orange plasticy woven stuff....anyway, forgotten what my point was now!!!

This is how i was taught be Ray Mears a few years ago . You should be able to shave your arm/(face) with it . Works well with kitchen knives as well.

So heres a video of how he does it

Thanks magpie, but noooo it wasn't crabline type line, sure it was mono netting. i'll have to find some more...

Jonny I think I know what type of netting you mean, you can spot it quite often on the beach because of its colour but you can find it in black as well.
It is the same type of netting used in a trawlers cod end or as used in crab pots.
The mono netting we all fear is clear mono, next time you go to micks have a look at his mono nets, only thin line maybe 50 - 60lb bs.?

Since the thread has turned a bit towards sharpening I'll throw my 2 cents in there. The big stones work great if you have a knife with a long and thick blade (like a hunting knife or a tough dive knife). For a smaller knife, like a finishing knife or a pocket knife, which usually have shorter thinner blades, the systems which use the angled sticks (I think it was spaniard who put a link up to one) work incredibly well. They will also work on larger knifes too. I have a spyderco system and have used it to sharpen all my knifes for years. Furthermore, these systems are good for people who have difficulty keeping a consistent edge on a knife using a stone. They also allow you to sharpen serrations, which a stone will not let you do. The spyderco system does anyway because it uses triangular rods instead of flat or round ones. I highly recommend these systems over stones.
