No diving to speak of but I did get out to checkout the lakes.

Spent about 2 hours biking yesterday and hit the outlet, yahara river, and went out to picnic point. The outlet has fish in it, but vis is less than 2'- you can see the backs of the carp breaking the surface. The yahara is open but vis has dropped quite a bit in there. I saw a little bit of open water by the rowing center on Lake Mendota, but vis is even worse there than the outlet!:head

This morning a friend and I went out kayaking for a few hours. There's quite a bit of open water on the south end of town. You can put in by Rutabaga kayak shop and paddle down through mud lake into Lake Waubesa. The north western part of Waubesa is open, but the rest is still iced up.

From there we paddled down the E-way and ran into some pissed off otters- they hissed at us and everything!:martial There were also lots of birds, but no vis anywhere. :(

You can paddle north through the river and end up in Squaw bay- on Lake Monona. Most of the bay is open, but the rest of the lake is frozen solid.

We did run into two divers, but they were using a hookah and dredging out part of the river for some construction project. I, assume, it was Koz as he does all the commercial work in town. He's a nice guy and I've done one salvage job with him in the past- bringing up a cabin cruiser out in Lake Michigan. He looked pretty busy busting his hump in 4' of water with the dredge this morning- no vis there either.

Winds have been out of the east so Lake Michigan is a mess- at least on this end of the lake. I imagine things are beautiful over on the other side of the lake- by Fondueset.

Biking and paddling is fun, but I'm anxious to get diving again. Maybe it's time to get out the chainsaws for one more ice dive?

I'd do a Ice Dive again- But I have a feeling the Ice will be mostly gone by the time I get back.

No pics of the otters? I didn't know we had those around here. That would be cool to see one. You sure it wasn't a LARGE Muskrat? HA.

We saw a couple of muskrat as well, but these were otters.

My little camera doesn't have much of a telephoto on it so this is the best shot I could get.

these were otters.

To bad you couldnt find a slide thats a real hoot to watch.

thanxs for the info chompin at the bit myself wondered if you could get through to Waubesa.

Lake Michigan and the Madison chain may be dirty - but down here near Lake Geneva all kinds of lakes have opened up to some extent and are very, very, CLEAR!

The outlets and inlets are wide open - so is my pool...I may "test" out my scuba wetsuit in my pool to see if I can hack the cold. Home ownership and "lactose intolerant" twins have got me a little strapped right now...I've budgeted for my open cell all winter long and have HAD the money several times...But something always comes up that is more important... lactose intolerant baby formula is about 40 bucks a can! Doctors order's for both babies...My wife "dried up" about a month ago when she fell ill and had to quit breast-feeding due to her medication she had to take to get well....:head

:hmm The babies drank about two "diveskins" wetsuits already! :chatupAnd we wont even discuss what diapers for THREE kids cost! But hey...They're my babies...Gotta love 'em...:inlove My stuff can wait. :head

I would LOVE to see the otter's! But they can get quite mean! While in Panama and Brazil years ago I saw some huge river otters...Them things are SUPER territorial....And loud! Awesome animals though.

P.S. - I have'nt been on here much lately...Working alot, and trying to organize a house Half FULL of boxes still!

I can't wait to try some of the lakes up there- I want to hit SWAN and fo sho - Crystal Lake. Should be good this time of year.

:fridayyeah i think we better hit swan lake monday or tuesday so if you want to come to my state whopp and try out spearfishing here than come on up and go with me love to have you there

Ted (unirdna) emailed me and said that Mendota, finally, broke open. It will take a week or two for things to clear up, but at least we have open water to play in.

I was in Kenosha today doing a job in a small high-rise building on the lake...Obviously with the rain and all it was like chocolate milk, out to a few miles atleast...

If my memory serves me right the perch should be "in"...Just not sure if they are "legal" yet or not...I do know there is a closed season for them.

I can't wait to get out again...no diving ALL winter for me!!!:head

The Perch in Lake Mich start in June (season) I can't wait to get into Mendota! Not looking forward to coming home to the cold. :D

It has'nt really been THAT cold...But the high winds and non-stop rain around here have browned things up quite a bit...I'm gonna try Geneva sometime next week...Hopefully it has cleared up by then...A fishing guide I know has recently caught some HUGE crappies by hook & line there! 12 to 14 inchers! :t

Still no open cell...But I'll handle it (the cold water) with my Scubamax farme John & jacket for atleast a few hours I'm sure!

:( Vis in Delavan Lake must ALWAYS suck...It sure did today...Only 4-5 feet..It was 53 degrees in the shallows ...Quite warm really for this time of year. No fish...Saw only 2 Largemouth. One of 'em was a slob though! Only went out to 12 foot...Even worse vis there. :hmm

went by the outlet again today well i think it is a lost cause it still isnt clear saw some nice size carp and of course the muskey were there as well they were just haveing a big party and i dont think i am invited :waterwork

I was out biking yesterday and checked out a bunch of different spots on Lake Mendota, Lake Monona, and Lake Waubesa. They all looked pretty bad in every spot I checked.:yack

The closest thing I could find to any visibility was right underneath the Monona Terrace- you could see almost 4'!

Great day for biking, or kayaking, but things look pretty lousy for diving right now.

Jon

Is this normal JON? I thought I remember diving the Outlet around this time of year- I could be wrong. I'm wrong alot- ask my wife. :D

i think i will have to agree on that as well LOL just joking bro just showing the love :martial

I remember things clearing up quicker in the past, but this winter we did have a record amount of rain, in January, and snow, the rest of the winter, so who knows what's going to happen.

I'm guessing we are going to have one heck of a crop of mosquitoes for sure. :vangry

I was out biking this morning along the very eastern portion of Lake Monona this morning and things did appear to be looking better. I'm talking about 3' of vis versus none when I say better.

Jon

Like I said, I went out on Sunday, wetsuitless. I got in about one and a half, to maybe two minutes in the water when I froze to death and had to come out. Saw some bluegill beds cleared off, but nothing other than that. Water temperature was up already as of today, but I don't know how soon I'm going to get into the water with my hospitalization yesterday. :head
