Hey all,

Looking to get a freedive suit for the pool as I begin training. I think I will need two at some point as I would love to dive locally ( Chicagoarea) and the waters I am sure would be cold so I would think I would need a 5mm or 7mm.

So anyway I would be starting with one for the local pool and it seems like a 1 or 2mm would be best. Should I be looking for a full suit or a shorty? Also I am 6'2 about 220 fairly athletic build and from what I have seen I would be in an XXL suit.

Any advice would be great.

For pool training, some ppl can get away with a triathlon suit. I use one for training in a cold pool.

If you're "athletically" built, consider one without sleeves, as it'll for your wide upper back, larger cheat diameter and biceps without issue. Biggest challenge is making sure water doesn't enter the neck. I added some additional velcro so that I could tighten up the neck area.

As for open water, stay warm and be comfortable - go custom! Some can be had for the same price as an off-the-rack suit.

I like Aqualandwetsuits.com , but there are many others around like Oceanos, Oceaner, Elios, etc.

In the pool I use a 4/3 surf/kite full wettie but if you just want a 1mm consider a hot top rash vest, 1-1.5mm neoprene with a metalized inner side to reflect heat back to the body, you can get shorts too. You can also use it under a thick suit in cold water. I use one under a 5mm Cressi Tecnica in 16ºC and it makes a big difference when in the water for a few hours.
See if you can find a shop that'll let you try some wetties on inside out so the nylon is against your skin with no lube.
Check out the sizing charts online. I'm 6,2 and 180lbs and the Cressi XL/5 fits like a glove, pretty true to the sizing chart.
