laser pointer on gun?

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
A laser is not a totally dumb idea. I would not use one, but it does not mean I think it's dumb or bad. But unless every fish you shoot is sitting still, then it may not be too practical imo.

As far as the learn to shoot your gun...it's a good comment, but could be taken as an insult. But yes, learn your gun, where it shoots and how it shoots at various distances. It is like a hand gun or rifle on land. Good shooters, the gun is an extension of them and the aim is natural. Lasers and such make the average shooter more accurate, but they will never be the pure shooter like the guy that practices his reactive skills continually.

I think that half an hour spent shooting plastic bottle with new gun is not wasted.

Aloha Gang,

Just saw this thread. I think anything that helps divers to insure that they can harvest fish within reason is good. I'm used to crystal lear waters where I live, but I have also had the pleasure/displeasure of diving in vis from 1ft to 300ft. In some parts of the US and world I'm sure there is a need for Lasers and lights. I do know many divers dive with small hand held lights to check caves and ledges. Many times I wished I had a light on my gun to see what it was pointing at in a hole.

A good friend asked if there was a way to mount a light on my hybrid and I said sendme a light and I'll find a way. I don't want to derail this thread, but I just thought you might find this interesting. I haven't tried it out and am still awaiting a report from my friend. I made it removable and also mounted it on two guns in different places to see if one is better than the other.

Check it out.

Aloha,Daryl

I like the idea of a light too....that one is small enough and in a good position so as not to hinder your spearing....
let us know how it goes ..

I like that idea Daryl..small, compact and looking in holes is always a problem(light wise)

Ray Oder was showing us his gun. He mounted a light very similar to Daryll's. He said the center of the light at about 3' from the fish is just as good as a laser sight on a regular firearm

jtkwest ... you are my hero... i agree with what your saying exactly... the only thing i think is truly "unsporting" is scuba spearing ....

I'm gonna attach a 10x Schmidt and Bender scope to my gun so I can shoot fish out to 100m.
Also, I'm gonna get night vision goggles to go in my mask.
im surprised the vis is good to 100m in plymouth, i guess 50 degree water gets really clear, down in the keys we rarely get better than 40 meters vis becuse the water never gets below 72.so my laser beams only need to go 30 to 40 meters here

sure, now that daryl wong comes to chime in on my side, you all agree now. where are all you sh%t talkers now HA HA! thank you daryl, i was about to get virtually lynched by some pissed englishmen, i think.

Pissed Englishmen? Has Daryl come back with an answer to whether or not the laser worked successfully? When he does and the owner of that gun acknowledges that lasers are any sort of advantage I will gracefully accept that there may be merit it them. Personally I think 10 minutes every now and again spent firing at a target will do the the trick. I've said it once and I'll say it a million times, you can have the best gun in the world but if you cant hit what you aim at then it's no good to you. The other point I was trying to make was that if the laser spooked more fish that it might allow you to catch then it isn't worth the bother.

i think i am gonna agree that the laser would spook fish. once again i think a light , and or camera is a better idea.i guess i am still not clear on your position, if wont ever work, and you are sure of this , then why oppose it from an "unfair advantage" type point of view? why not quote daryl, and argue with him? instead of me? that is my point. so, if it does work, and does give an advantage, is it immoral? i dont think it could EVER work well enough to be unfair. and since this is a website of idea exchange, i am just exchanging ideas. as far as "pissed englishmen" is concerned, i was KIDDING , i really thought you all ,(you mostly) wouldnt still be pissed, so i was joking. but i guess that was accurate after all. SORRY man. just an idea. honestly you have been giving me more incentive to see if it would work. so if you really hate a laser so much , stop argueing and you will never see one. i think a light IS a great idea, what do you think about a light with a remote on off switch? is that unfair, or otherwise a bad idea? if so, QUOTE DARYL, not me , and tell HIM. to practise HIS shooting . you may be (maybe not)a better shot than me , but i would venture a guess that Daryl might be out of YOUR league.

Pissed Englishman? Pastor is Welsh, he won't like you for that.....roflrofl:rcard

Dude......chill
Daryl just makes 1 post with regards to the subject and your a lovesick puppy....relax...breathe....
As for the pissed englishmen thing....you only said that for him to retaliate....dont call it a joke when it clearly wasn't, u look foolish
the idea of a light is great in my opinion...(can see into caves, dark spots, night diving etc.)..but why use it for aim...seems strange...like pastor says...just practise....Spearing is an active sport, why the laziness....

Don't worry about the pissed englishmen comment I'm Welsh and unconcerned anyway.

The thing about lasers is that they trace out a straight line and there isn't a speargun on this earth that shoots in a straight line. I can see the merit of putting a light on a gun but in many parts of the world that in itself is against the law and that includes the whole of the European union. So a laser might be of some use within a certain window of range but beyond that your guessing again if it's a small fish and if it's that big then you shouldn't need it. It's not down to gaining an unfair advantage more than there are too many problems associated with it to justify having it if you add that to scaring the fish. After 34 years of spearing I have learned enough to know that most ideas have been tried before and if they're not commonly used it's because they don't work or you're better off without one.

Thankfully Daryl is a good friend of mine so he won't mind me saying this. I doubt he is a better shot than me or if he is it won't be by much. He puts the time in to practice and so do I, every week of the season I devote time to reassure myself that I'm going to hit what I point at. Daryl however may well be a much better hunter than me, that's an entirely different thing, more and more skills learned make us more complete spearfishers.

i beg the pardon of all the welsh and english out there. i thought wales was a part of england. isnt the royal family from there? either way, i didnt realize it would be insulting to refer to one as the other. i am of irish catholic descent myself, so i dont think my grandfather would appreciate being mistakenly called english either. in that light, i beg your pardon. to whomever it may concern.

i think the "lovesick puppy" thing might apply to you, in reference to pastor. are you his secret admirer, or just a fan?i may not agree on this subject, but i dont think he needs anyone to help him argue about spearfishing. who says i want to use a light for aim? how would that work exactly? seems like not. i would like to discuss the IDEA of lights to explore the dark holes where the black groupers,(many here in keys) hide. seems like a good idea to me. i have been called many things, but lazy doesnt apply, come up with a new insult. on that subject: why does everyone think its ok to openly call me names. but if i say anything , i get banned and warned and stuff? the word "pissed", in USA is not considered an insult, more of a description of mood. and Englishmen may not be loved by everyone, but is hardly an insult. not even close. "lovesick puppy" on the other hand, (to my face, especially) might be a problem. but you dont need to worry as long as you stick to using the computer from a safe distance. but you probably are a "pussycat " in real life. you just play "ballsy" from a safe distance. i know the type, sorry to say

i beg the pardon of all the welsh and english out there. i thought wales was a part of england. i

You are joking rofl Wales is an occupied nation at war with England!

Carbon fibre is fine when it's used properly, even I eventually bought a carbon gun, well a part carbon gun
