I know this stupid but I had to ask. Has anyone used those red light lazers like you would find on a gun to attract fish. I know for a fact that fish go crazy over them and instantly come check them out. I worked in a pet store once and we sold lazers to people who owned fish tanks and the fish would all chase the light around. I don't want to get into the ethics of baiting fish in, just curious if anyone has ever tried it? I'm sure all those special forces guys have water proof lazers.

dude you might have just stumbled on the most successful flasher Idea there :)

Mate, this is a well discussed & debated subject on db! Lasers are very controversial subject for some & some of us have had our hands burnt during these discussions! Anyhow I can assure you first hand that red lasers do not work in more than 2' of water.

So no more than 2 foot range in water? What about really good clear water? It seems in clear water you should be able to get a 20' foot range at least? Then again the physics of light moving through water is beyond me but I can shine my lazer at home clear through lengthwise on my five foot long fish tank no problem, now I know vis is always not that good but I bet it can be done. Please steer me towards these old threads I definently want some more info. I'm going to have to go stand on the peir tonight with my lazer, minus the gun, and check it out.

Dude trust me - red disperses very quickly under water...
When you have done your experiments send me a pm & I will tell you what does work!

Within this very forum lurk dark people who work through the night playing with lasers and such.....hubble, bubble, toil and trouble. They are led by a fellow by the name Foxfish. Beware.............

You been looking through my curtains again? Mines not working right :vangry Think it needs some attention from the claw hammer...

This is very interesting. Something new to experment with. Now where do i get waterproof lazer. I havent found something this interesting for a long time. Thanks deckhand mike.

Wasn't the point about red lasers that red light is lost below a certain depth? So the 2' could be the depth below which the laser light disappears, not the horizontal range.Anyway, the answer is to find a green laser. Don't know whether all the particles in sea water also have an effect in dispersing the light, but no doubt someone on the forum will know ...

The red light is absorded by the volume it passes through, whether its vertical or horizontal.
Some of us already have greenies, though mine has had to be sent back :vangry

Yes, particles will reduce the range but intial tests show ample remains :)

The more important question is what mW is the laser (50 or 60)? Those have amazing distance/power in air. One more question, how do you make sure they are waterproof?

Mine was only 25mW and it didn't get a proper work out in the water before it went caput (not caused by the dunking btw) but dipping it over the side of a pontoon in a marina showed at least 8-10m range easily.

How you waterproof them is only limited by your imagination.

Dont know about attracting fish but i experimented with using a laser as an aiming device a few years ago. didnt get great results as there wasnt great range and a lack of a backdrop to see were I was pointing. So I am a bit useless other than to say that I used a fairly cheap waterproof flashlight and gutted it, inserted the laser into the housing and mounted it to my gun. I held the trigger on the laser with electical tape.

Great to read some dicussion on homemade gear other floatlines!!!

This is an interesting topic since it might actually work, there are cheaper lasers than the one deckhand mike sugested. check this out LaserGlow.com

Has anyone tried it yet? I meen the green since it seams that the red doesn't work
