learning ocean science

Love the ocean, sailing, kayaking, freediving. Have learned to identify some fish, seaweed, birds. Want to expand to plankton and wonder if anyone has a link or other ideas for self study.
Also considering getting a microscope but not sure what type to get. If anyone is currently studying plankton would like to hear some opinions. Location is ventura county, california coast.
