I am in the process of sketching some ideas for a compact / lighter pot for setting during calm spells from the kayak.
I have salvaged washed up comercial pots before, but these are heavy and bulky. They are designed for leaving out during swells, and last for years so over engineered for the above.
I have also used the folding shrimp pots. I recongnise the entrance on these is tight for a decent lobster / crab and as the mesh is so fine they fill with swimmers.
Couple of questions ...
Size of opening for lobster (UK).
Once inside the trap is space an issue? The traps always seem to be soo much bigger than they need to be.
Mesh size! , I am thinking 2" mesh so the swimmers can escape.
To stop escape I plan a cone shaped entrance.
Lack of understanding re. pot design! , although I have looked at google images for pots for some ideas. However my main thoughts are how compact can I go.
Currently I am considering a cylinder shaped pot using rings for the frame cut from the large size sewer pipe.
Any one have experience or ideas about making your own traps? Cheers.
