Hi Guys,

Starting at 7:30 tonight I'm planning a briefing on equalisation and sinus problems; this will be before we get into the water at 8pm.

I shall be demonstrating sinus irrigation; this is a technique which has been used for centuries, if not thousands of years in Southeast Asia.

It is very easy to do and its benefits are manifold.

These include treatment for Post Nasal Drip, respiratory allergies .e.g. Rhinitis, to help prevent sinus infections, the removal of particulate matter such as dust, city pollution or other irritants and the gentle re-hydration of the mucus membranes. But for us, as freedivers the main benefit is to clear the sinuses of mucus and to help keep clear the drainage sites of the frontal sinuses. This of course allows us to facilitate the equalisation of our sinuses during diving.

Another benefit is the reduction in any swelling of the tissues, thus allowing the sinuses to drain more easily.

We will have a look at sinus massage; this can be done by yourself or by another person. Having someone else do this is the preferred method as it allows the person with the problem to relax more.

I shall also be giving a masterclass on the Frenzel technique of equalisation and explaining the advantages this manoeuvre has over the quite brutal Valsalva method.

We shall be getting into the pool for 8pm where it can be up to you to decide what you would like to practice, this can be:

Static apnea
Dynamic apnea
Rescues
Duck dives etc.

If requested we can finish off the session with a game of Toypedus energeticus to help keep us fit and to hone those underwater throwing skills.

A quick warm up in the sauna, tea and biscuits and we’re finished.

See you all later.

Regards

Simon.
