Longer Spear? Shorter Stock?

Here's my question, why do most spearguns have ten cm (four inches) or so of spear hanging off the stock of the gun? What advantage does it provide, besides the obvious tracking improvement? It just seems a little counter intuitive because the more stock you have, the farther your bands can pull and the father your spear goes!

on a side note, how do you measure a speargun? I hear a lot about 90 cm to 100 cm guns, but where do you measure? is it the stretch range of the bands?

to measure: from the tip of your gun to your trigger housing (roughly). its the length of your barell basically

So from where the bands start stretching?

You can experiment if you want to? Try a slightly longer spear, it might work but it might start a huge wobble in the spear on firing? You could fit a shorter spear but long thin spears go straight & true so you might loose some range?
most manufacturers have settled on a idea length of spear to match there product but it can vary from gun to gun!
Enclosed track guns dont suffer in the same way in that they are not so sensitive to spear length.
I am afraid to say you might find it hard to find detailed info on underwater ballistics but the more popular guns are very well tried & tested.
