Im only a year into the sport of spearfishing and have been doing so only with a polespear. Ive been really successful but am now ready to take on larger game species along the coast of New Jersey like Stripers, black bass and so on... I am looking to pick up a proper gun to handle the job of hunting near jeddis and offshore. So far ive been focused on the AB Biller 48 inch Mahagony gun with the thought that it was small enough for reflex and had enough punch for getting striper. Plus it was inexpensice when compared to a RiFFE or custom rifle. I just wanted to see if anyone could give me a better vantage point on the subject because I dont know if that would be the right gun for the job. Any help would be greatly appreciated. - Chris

Hi Chris

Some time ago I bougth a wong hibryd midhandle 42" (Wong Guns) from a guy from NJ. Daryl call that gun the Northestearn. I really like that gun in poor viz waters.

This is from Daryl website: " “THE NORTHEASTER” was also developed for the low visibility areas that “the pistol” was developed for. When the visibility improves to 5-8 feet, then the Northeaster is the one to have."

Thanks for the site, though im probably still a little too ill experienced to invest in a pricier custom gun like his, its definitely something ill keep in the back of my mind a year or two down the road

a short 75-85cm euro style gun (I prefer the omer & beuchat guns) works great for low viz diving

I hunt in NJ and recommend Cyrano from LeisurePro:
Mares Cyrano Pneumatic Spearguns from LeisurePro.com
It is the best price to my knowledge. 700 or 850 will suit you just fine. I have 850 and the spear goes all the way through the 24 lb striper with ease. It is a very powerful and precise gun with two switchable power settings. Plus you can always adjust air pressure by regulating number of pump strokes.

A 90cm Rob Allen or Rabitech is the best choice for your conditions. They are very durable guns, can handle all the power you need, accurate and fairly inexpensive to maintain.
