I'm new to spearfishing and have yet to actually get out there. I'm planning a trip to Catalina, and most likely will be out there at the end of August.(Cant't wait) I'd like to do a local spot as a warm up.

Can anyone recommend a spot around Orange County that is good?

I've been thinking that Laguna or Corona del Mar could be chill, but I'm not sure about which fish you can take or if you can't in certain places.

I think it would be awesome if anyone were willing to teach me the basic's. I feel that even though I've read much about safety and what not, having a buddy system with an experienced free diver/spearo would be most beneficial to me.

Thank you for your time

Hi Blake, how's the planning going for your Catalina trip? Which boat will you be taking? I went out there and it was just gorgeous. The hunting wasn't great, but that was a different time of year. I hope you've had luck finding someone to dive with :)
