Hi, I live in SoCal been going kayaking out of Marina Del Ray and Redondo beach. Really want to learn the sport of spearfishing and freediving! At first I just want to probally get a pole spear in case I drop it I do not lose hundres of dollars. Lot of great info on this forum. I was wondering where can I get to with a kayak to try spearfishing and what tips should I buy for the polespear? and what fish can I expct to hunt with it? I just bought a wetsuit mask fins and will pick up a polespear by the weekend. also they got a fiberglass one or a aluminum pole any difference between the 2?
Thanks for all help
Justin

Hi Buckshot, not from the area. But I can help with a few general things to look for. If your out in the water, look for reefs or pinnacles coming up, the fish normally concentrate around these. Secondly on the pole spear allthough I use a railgun Ive seen pics of guys taking huge fish with these, the type of speartip u use depends on the type of hunting like a multiple prong tip will be used for cave hunting etc. Also I dont think fibreglass or aluminium makes a big difference as the diam of the circle will still be the same. Allthough aluminium might be a better option, for me personally as I feel it is a bit stronger than fibreglass and also fibreglass being more likely to crack or shatter if it bumps or gets a hard knock. :)

Hi Justin,
I'm another SoCal spearfishing-newbie just getting into beach diving. Laguna Beach has a good number of highly rated reef spots and there's always Palos Verdes Penninsula. Either your kayak or just going in from the surf will put you into some awesome hunting. The polespear is the weapon of choice among several of my friends for halibut, corbina (fish tacos deluxe!) and, when your stalking skills get really good, calico bass and sheephead. Come the day when you can bag a white sea bass with a polespear, you can call yourself an ace!

hey thanks a lot for the advice. I will definatly check those spots out. I checked on Laguna Beach, the weather report is saying that 6'+ waves this weekend. I might have to wait a lil bit to get out there thats big waves.
My bud wants to go fishing out in the redondo harbor with reg fishing poles. just catch and release wouldent eat the fish from there!
