Is a low volume mask any better to use for hunting than a scuba mask? If so anybody have a brand they want to reccomend.
Thanks

volume of mask and field of vision is a kind of trade off (or was kind a trade of until OMER produce alien mask). Low volume is mask is much better for dep dives, because it will need less air to equalize than high volume mask, but in shallow water hunt, mask with greater field of view will help you more to see what around easier. I had high volume, low volume, big field of view, small field of view masks i used them for different purposes but since i have omer alien i used it for everything, its low volume with very big field of view mask and very comfortable due to soft silicone, well at least its comfortable for my face. I think omer alien is definite winner, if fits your face then get it. One more thing to consider, don't buy mask with clear silicone for hunting, coz light rays will make your eyes more visible and it may also cause reflections which is no no :naughty when hunting. Hope that helps.

Another good mask is the Cressi lince, bit more volume, but real good vision!!
Another important issue is your snorkel, buy a simpel, flexible snorkel....scuba snorkels are a real nightmare!!
ps...why the **** do scuba divers use these terrible snorkels??:)

You mean like the Impulse 2? I have one of those :D got it because I didn't know better. It's pretty dry, but it would have been nice to not spend so much on a snorkel.

Oh yeah, and I have an Omer Alien. It's quite nice - comfortable, good seal, and decent volume. Mine has reflective, tinted lenses and a mimetic frame :D but you don't really need those extras.

I use the Alien at the moment, best seal I have ever had.

I have a small face and have tried a few mask`s but the one i use at the moment is a seatec athos which is low volume. every other mask was a waste of time.

Hi all,
I use the Omer Alien.
Superb low volume mask, can't go wrong with it.

I also tried the SeacSub X-Low combat which is more expensive but nowhere nearly as good. The quick-adjusting bucklestrap is terrible and the mask itself not nearly as comfortable as the Alien.

BTW I used to spearfish to depths of 20m with a standard mask and the effort it takes to equalise the pressure inside it meant much shorter stays under. The Alien makes it so much easier, meaning more time to hunt.

Hope this helps some

I use a cressi matrix and an omer alien - both have prescription lenses bonded to the lense which significantly reduces volume. Personally I think that compressibility is as if not more important than volume. A mask that compresses easily will need less equalization. The alien has both low volume and good compressibility. As I bonus the filed of view improves with compression.

PS - I've used the impulse II snork for years - not expensive if you get it online and the best open water snorkel I've found. I can dive in waves, chop and high wind without my surface intervals being compromised by the need to clear my snorkel.

Hi,

I recommend the futura 1 from Scubapro , great mask, with low volume, easy to compensate. Also the price is great, about 21 Euro, over 50 % cheaper than Omer Alien.

By the way for me its the best mask that I have ever been using, but this is also an individual matter, faceshape rules this matter.

i finally decided to go with the omer alien. Got it about 2 weeks ago, but finally got to try it yesterday. BEST mask i have ever used, fits my face extremely well.i didnt have any problems with it, even in the 44 degrees F water. Thanks for all of the input and advice.

I use Alien as well, due to large silicone skirt it fits real nice. Love it

Yepp!
The futura 1&2 are very common in the exciting world of uw-rugby. Great field of view, low volume and they can take a serious beating without breaking!!:crutch

i totally agree on the quality of the Omer Alien mask, such a good fit.No fogging no leaking and no need to remove it mid session for any reason, can't get better than that.

Hi All

Have just discovered the most comfortable and best mask I've ever used for freediving. It's a great balance between vision quality and low volume, Trevor Hutton ( My freedive instructor) claims it's the best mask he's dived with. It's a Technisub marina, Pic attatched.
I think it,s quite a nice looking mask as well. Just my 2 cents worth! :D

Jeff,

How did you get your hands on one of those??

My father-in-law just came back from DEMA and I had a single request for him- too get me a Marina mask.

After bouncing back and forth between our local Aqualung rep and the Technisub rep he finally was told that he couldn't buy one.:head They only had a picture of one, not even a display model at the world's biggest dive show!:vangry They told him that it "might" become available for sale some time after Easter in 2007.:rcard

I've been looking on-line and could only find one shop, on another continent, that said they had them but that they don't take credit cards or Paypal.:head

How does it compare to the Sphera or the Falco?

Jon

i tried a number of masks/snorkels, cressi, sporasub, omer etc... the most comfortable for me was surprizingly a sherwood mako. its a black frameless, low volmue mask. the best low volume, high viz combination i ever tried

i use the impulse 3 snorkel, works like a dream for spearfishing. i dnt hunt in caves so much so snorkel flexibility is not a main qualty i look for

Hi Jon

One of the local dive shops in capetown stocks them. I have onlu ever used sporasub Dassault, so cannot compare it to Sphera or falco, but certainly it seems to sit better tjhan my dassault and field of vision is improved. I would be glad to put you in touch with the shop if you want them to mail one over to you?? Let me know via PM. :D

best regards

Jeff.

A big thanks to BlueCape for the lead on a diveshop that actually carries the Marina. They have them in stock and sent mine out today! :) They sell for $55US +shipping. You can contact them through their website: http://www.diveaction.co.za/

I'll post pics once I get the mask in my hands.

Jon
