Being fairly new to advanced techniques, I am struggling a bit with the "packing" concept. Could someone describe "packing" or point me to the appropriate source of information?

I will apologize ahead of time if I have missed a description elsewhere in the forums. Thanks for your time.

Hi,

Freediver UK have a video of Loic LeFerme describing his Packing technique:

However, please be aware that packing is an extremely dangerous technique and should only be practiced with caution. You run the risk of injurying yourself

Hi Stephan,

Can you please tell me what are the exact dangers or risks that packing might involve if not executed correctly? How about the pros, are they also affected by risks themselves or is the technique perfectly safe if proceeded correctly? The first logical thing that comes to mind is overpressure to the lungs. Thanks a lot!

You will find plenty of info about packing and the risks associated with it if you look up the archive - there are several extensive threads on the topic, and there are also several medical studies documenting the lung damage. Basically, from the latest research, it seems that packing results in lung tissue rupture or permeability rather inevitably. Long term effects are still to be studied closer.

Some of the studies are listed for example here:

The latest documents were discussed in the freediving science subforum here on DB
