I am the lone freediver in my area, I have began freediving for abalone in northern California 40 years ago and I am 55 years old now. In recent years I have been working on upgrading my freediving abilities with help from books like "The Freediving Manual / Underwater on a Single Breath". I swim in the pool for cardio, do breathing excercises, dynamic apnea in the pool and practice diving in the bay. Since I am often on my own I am very conservative and do not push my limits much without someone around. On the 14th I was practice diving to 50 feet and the next morning during breathing excercises I noticed a small amout of blood in my phlegm. Two days later I was spearfishing to 40 or 45 feet and the next morning I say what might have been blood as well. A physical and chest xray since showes no obvious pathology or injury but it might be lung sqeeze. Any thoughts or advice?

Re: Lung squeese

Hi Dan,

The depths are too shallow for classic lung squeeze, but I know another diver ("scott" on these forums), and have heard of at least one more, who had similar problems in similar depth. Scott's problem sure seems to be some kind of squeeze. He tried diaphram stretches with good effect. Pm him for more info. I'm pretty interested in this subject, so please post your future experiance, especially what works on the problem.

Re: Lung squeese

Hi Conner,
Thanks for the note, I am a beginner at this forum stuff, what do you meen "PM" Scott? Here is another question: when I read some of these articles regarding lung issues and breathhold technique I hear the term "warming up", I hate to admit it but I have no idea what they are talking about, can help me on that point?

Thanks,

Dan

Seb,
That was a great link, although my symptoms were different and less dramatic this is a big help in getting educated to prevent further trouble.

Thanks,

Dan

Hi Dan,

PM is "private message" You will find a link in the top right of this page. Scroll down the left side of the link until you find "new message" Type in scott in the address and go from there. I'll PM you as an example.

There is another very useful tool, the "search" function, just under the "private message" box. Use it to look up info on all kinds of stuff. For example, type in "diaphram stretch" and you will find a description of it.
