My wife bought me a set of large freedive hunter fins and I am unsure of how they should fit,
I wear a size 10.5 shoe, with the fins bare footed if I put on the fin and lean forward my heal comes right out, same with a thick wool sock or a 2mm neoprene sock, with two 2mm socks it stays ok but feels like I could get the heal to slide if I was aggressive with it, Haven't put them in the water to matain the return option...
what is my best action? return for a smaller fin? 5mm socks? fin keepers? etc

Return and get proper fitting fins. Good fitting fins are really important for you to have good technique and generate power.

Even a 5mm sock will compress to less than 2mm beyond 20m and you don't want your fins falling off down there.

Another relatively easy test is to put the fins on (with whatever socks etc. that you will use them with) and then sit in a chair with your legs more or less straight and try to kick them off. If they fly off relatively easily, they are probably too big.

You can also try them in a pool. As long as they are not scratched and remain in like new condition, getting them wet won't be a problem.
