RA 120 for bass? If they are far away I guess so. Seems like overkill for most conditions I've seen though - an RA70 would suit those better. Visibility is rarely that good in my experience - but as you live in Cornwall I guess you have the pick of good conditions in some of the clearest water locations around the UK mainland - so if it works for you, great. I think SpearoDave used to use a 120 for one of the off-shore locations he used to visit (in Cornwall) - best thing for that location he reckoned.

RA120 even in Cornwall is a bit keen. You must have had something smaller sized to keep you interested and getting fish over the last 10 years?
Unless you are hitting very skittish bream coming in very late on your drops then I'd suggest finding a 90 and a 6.5mm spear.
Would be nice to see your pics of the 16lb fish you had.....dont see many that size, well not down in Cornwall at least as they seem leaner from all the exercise they get off this coast.

Thanks for your comments 120 is no over kill its perfect for the spots I go. In fact I would even use a 140 to hit the bream. Spearo dave I've heard about this guy but never met him. I've been Spearing around Cornwall all my life mainly soloing so know my side pretty well. I've been put off joining this site for a long time due to so called elite BSA how don't really do anything for the spot and shoot baby fish.

A 120 for bass? Really? Have you actually used it yet?
Bass, even big ones, are really not that hard to shoot. 99% of the time if you think you need a bigger gun, what you really need is to be a better diver and to learn how not to spook fish.
I too would love to see a photo of your 16lb bass

I have a 110 band gun but I found it a bit of a pain to swim with and load for the rare occasions we get good enough vis.
Of course if you getting your targets on a plate... that is what matters

Foxfish probably could have done with mentioning that this site/forum is not the BSA.
However, should you wish to find out the lengths to which Dave Thomasson on a personal level, and as BSA Fisheries Officer has gone to preserve our spearfishing in the UK (including the new MCZ's), then I would suggest you perhaps make contact via the BSA to help clear up your perception of "elite BSA how don't really do anything for the spot and shoot baby fish."

Hi Jay, we welcome all sorts here. As far as I know, we are not owned or run for the benefit of the BSA, although I think their members use the forum sometimes (perhaps as their preferred forum now?). The BSA sometimes take flack here from some forum members, while receiving support (at various levels) from others. I think it is useful to see others perspectives - that way perhaps we can moderate each others excesses?

Keep using the forum, it sounds like you have developed your own perspective, always interesting to read about and learn from others experiences. Presumably you are often diving in clear conditions. Do you have a shorter speargun for murkier conditions?
