I was given a Mares Cyrano spear gun by a friend to start learning how to spear fish, but it turns out its broken. Whenever I load it it cocks fine but the spear falls out. I found the manual online, but it doesn't contain any information on how to disassemble. Some guys that took a look at it said it has to be the piston. I asked a service shop in my area and they informed me they would charge me $150 to repair, which makes me contemplate whether to repair it since a brand new Mares Cyrano costs around $350 on Amazon or buy a brand new gun of lower quality. The price of a piston on http://www.spearfishingworld.com/ is $16, so I was thinking of trying to repair it by myself. I would love anyone's opinion on what they would do in my place, how hard or feasible is switching out the piston, and would this even be the issue the gun is having.

It's likely that the front of the piston is broken or cracked.

You can check it quite easily. Here's a very informative thread describing in details how to get inside:
http://forums.deeperblue.com/threads/pneumatic-dismantling-how-to-get-inside.90024/

You need to take all the air out of the gun as described. Unscrew the muzzle. Then you have access to the piston. Check if it's broken or cracked and check if the shock absorber in the muzzle is good.
Please note that oil can exit the gun from the inner barrel if the piston not is there to stop it from doing so.

You can find the parts diagram in this thread:

The other functional part that keeps the shaft in place is the shaft connector/tail.

The "Cyrano" uses a 7mm shaft with an 8mm shaft connector. The end of the connector (the cone that enters the piston) is approx. 5,7mm.

Easy fix,

release all the air from the gun on full power (not all the air will escape on low power and could be dangerous) unscrew the muzzle remove the piston (will be sticking out a little at the top). Insert the new piston, then screw back on the muzzle and pump it back up. You may run into dramas if you have a older model and the inner barrel may rotate, if so you will need to remove the trigger assembly and tighten at the rear of the gun as well.

below is a video of speargun maintenance for a similar vintair, i couldnt find one for the cyrano.

How do you know that the spear you have is meant for the gun you have. Did you friend use that spear with that gun or did he "receive" it broken as well.
