Mares Essence Liquidskin

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
I've seeen and touched it in my lds, and I liked it a lot (very soft silicone). I am considering to buy this mask for 0-15 meters spearfishing.
I'm sorry I can't tell you exactly how much is the internal volume, but it looks like it's comparable to the Alien's, even if it's hard to compare by impression a 2 lenses mask to a monolens.
I was about to ask impressions to the forum about this new fashion of monolens masks being offered on the market for spearfishing-freediving purpose (Mares Essence, Effesub Seven, H. Dessault Wahoo, Antolas Diva...). Maybe it's not just a fashion, maybe new materials and processes have made possible a significant improvement of monolens masks...
The only monolens I've ever used was the Pinocchio almost 20 years ago, when everybody agreed that bi.lens was better due to lower internal volume (monolens has unnecessary room between the eyes) and less visual deformation.
However it seems that newer technology frameless liquid silicone masks are a totally different, newer, better product than the old huge volume monolens masks a la Cousteau and I'm very curious to give it a try.
The Mares Essence (picture below) looks great but it is a bit pricey, though....

Thanks so far.

It would be very nice if you keep us informed. I´m just a fun-diver. I´ve been to -27 so far on my own. I don´t know what it is. Perhaps it´s just the "I want something new to play"-feeling. I´m quite happy with my two Minimas. But I have to admit the range of view isn´t the best. So I would like to buy something as a backup to the minima.
I had a normal Liquidskin for snorkeling and fundiving. I can´t remember the exact name. It sounds strange, but this mask was leaking all the time. I tried everything and sold it just after one afternoon of use.

So at the moment I´m thinking of the Cressi Occhio Plus. But then this Mares-Mask crossed my way.

Hi all,
We will begin disribution of our new Essence LiquidSkin® mask to Mares retailers early next month. We are just now receiving our first shipment of production samples. We had preproducton samples to show at some trade shows last year. While they were "unfinished" looking we could see that this should prove to be a very popular mask with the scuba and freediving community. The essence boasts a very nice field of vision, relatively low volume considering single lens, and the supple Mares proprietary LiquidSkin® silicone; this is definitely a mask not to be overlooked. We have established a MSRP in the U.S. of $100.00. While it is not the cheapest mask, it is not the most expensive in the industry either. IMO it is definitely worth spending a few extra bucks for something that has as much impact to your comfort, vision, and performance as a mask does. Whether it is Mares or other, this is the only equipment keeping water out of your eyes and nose, hopefully not distorting vision (particularly when hunting), and is in constant contact with your skin for very extended periods of time. Anyhow definitely worth a look. Thanks for your interest!

Off the proverbial soap box.

Best regards,

problem with liquid skin is the skirt is too soft and defroms at depth, hence the leaking during a dive. no for all people but it is a very common problem here in australia, many of the guys i dive with have had the same issue and revert back to their cressi, omer, Oceanic etc. personally if you are after a mono lense mask then the Oceanic Shadow is brilliant, excellent vision, fits almost everybody and has a low volume consideringbthe mono lense design. also very cheap in most market.

its a shame that the liquid skins do not handle depth very well because they are very comfortable when in the shop. but i guess as many people have noticed the outer soft skirt regualrly deforms under pressure allowing water to enter.

just my thoughts

Actually I´m not really looking for a single-lens mask. I´ve just visited the Mares-Site for a look after new products or so. And the essence looks interesting. As I said; I can´t even say why exactly it attracts me. rofl

Regarding the Liquidskin I have to say, that I had a X-Vision Liquidskin. I bought it together with my first freediving mask (Cressi Minima). I just had to buy the X-Vision. It was so incredibly comfortable on my face,... unbelievable. Ok, I said to myseld, I would use the X-Vision for snorkeling with my girlfriend.
But I didn´t manage to get this mask not to let water in. Even without going deep; I had water in it all the time. Perhaps my face is too narrow??!?! I gave the mask to a friend of mine; he has no problems.

The X-Vision LiquidSkin comes in two different skirt sizes. Regular and Mid. The mid size is to accomodate smaller and or more narrow faces.

Best,

Thanks, but I know this.

I tried both sizes in my local dive shop. The test (inhale through nose) worked on both masks. The mid size felt better on my face, so I took this one. After the first time in the water I was really surprised that it was leaking.

I've had the same problem with the Omer Abyss, and also with the Alien (but finally I managed to sort it out somehow with the Alien and it doesn't leak anymore).
When a mask leaks, it is rarely the fault of the mask itself. Industries invest too much in D & R, moulds, testing, patents et cetera to launch a wrong product on the market. It happens sometimes, but quite rarely.
The Liquidskin technology has been on the market for several years now, so we can assume it's a reliable material. Maybe it simply was not fitting to your face.
Or otherwise:

liquid skin material reliable yes, doesnt fail as such however , the fact is under pressure it flare out allowing water o enter, the silicone on the skirt edge is simply too soft and doesnt have the structural support to maintain its shape and therfore a suitable seal on the majority of people. this isnt just a personal observation but one made by MANY retail stores here in australia and therefore i also assume many other places in the world (we cant be the only ones) the number of masks i sell after a customer has purchased a liquidskin (because it was sooo comfortable) only to find it leaking at any sort of depth is remarkable. now i'm not saying build quality is bad because it is not bad but the design of the skirt and material are flawed in my opinion all that is needed is for the skirt edge (the super squishy bit) to be slightly stiffer and the masks wuld be ok.

Thanks for the feedback, DD.
Can't you give me any first hand info on how liquidskin performs in shallow water (0-10 mt)?
In facts I was considering the Essence monoglass for shallow water spearfishing, where I've always preferred wide vision masks rather than low volume.

with liquid skin yes, but not this model, have only used the x-vision style, pretty comfortable i agree but only used it for about 30min 9wuldnt stop leaking)

not to mention here in Australia they are EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE. personal choice for single lense mask is OCEANIC Shadow. excellent vision, good compression (have used past 25m) no frame, nice black silicone and 40% cheaper than the mares.

not sure if they are available in Europe but they should be.

def my number one choice, otherwise the Cressi piuma looks pretty cool but havent ued it yet.
